Job Title: Social Media & Marketing Lead (Extended Board, Non-Voting Member)

Organization: The Mariam Society

Commitment: ~5 hours per week

Term: 2 years

Compensation: $3,000 per year

Ideal Candidate: Fourth-year university student or graduate student

About the Mariam Society

12 million adolescent girls in India do not go to school because their parents can’t afford it, or they are needed to help with household work. The Mariam Society wants to give these girls every opportunity to stay in school and become financially independent.

We began our work in 2019 with a mission to fund education programs that empower girls in developing countries, to end the cycle of poverty. Education makes girls less vulnerable to child marriage and abuse, and is the most important factor in moving her out of the cycle of multigenerational poverty.

Together with our partners Grameen Foundation for Social Impact India, founded by Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus who pioneered the first use of microcredit in the 1970s, we offer highschool and university level education scholarships and empowerment workshops to girls living in rural India.

We have a goal to fund 4000 education scholarships by 2030. To date we have funded over 700 scholarships, and 99% of the girls we support complete high school.

In 2025, we launched the Mullins Family University Scholarship program for 25 of our high-performing high-school graduates, furthering our mission to end the cycle of poverty through education.

Our charity is volunteer run in Canada, including our Founder, Gita Banks, and the Mariam Society Board of Directors. 92% of donations go directly to our field programs.

Position Overview

The Social Media & Marketing Lead will drive the Mariam Society’s digital engagement strategy. As a non-voting member of the extended Board, you will play a hands-on role in shaping how we communicate our mission, share stories from the field, and inspire supporters to take action.

A successful candidate will have a deep passion for social impact, particularly supporting the education of girls living in poverty and contributing to the alleviation of poverty through education. This is an ideal opportunity for a student who wants to use their voice, creativity, and digital skills to advance meaningful change while building a strong portfolio in nonprofit marketing and communications.
