ABOUT YOUTH WELLNESS HUBS ONTARIO (YWHO) -Northumberland

YWHO Northumberland serves youth across Northumberland County (aged 12 to 25) by providing low barrier access to a full range of services including, but not limited to, primary care, mental health and substance use counselling, service navigation, peer support, and community and social supports- all through a one-stop shop model with youth-friendly access points. YWHO follows an Iintegrated Youth Services model that focus on early intervention and collaboration among various service providers to address gaps in the healthcare system for young people.

ABOUT THE ROLE

Reporting to the Youth Wellness Hub Manager/Care Coordinator, and working alongside a multi-disciplinary service team, the Skills & Wellbeing Practitioner will adopt an empowerment-based, youth-centered approach to connecting and engaging young people through the Hub’s social-recreational programming. Through the intentional use of activities and events that vary in nature (i.e. responsive, planned, co-created) this role will develop therapeutic relationships that positively influence the mental, emotional, social, and physical needs of the youth they serve.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Youth Engagement & Relationship Building

  • Cultivating a safe, supportive atmosphere, promoting the inclusion of youth aged 12-25, ethnicities, cultures, abilities, socioeconomic backgrounds, gender identities, and sexual orientations.
  • Build trusting and therapeutic relationships with youth through consistent engagement, presence, and strengths-based interactions.
  • Contribute to the development of a positive Hub culture grounded in inclusion, respect, and empowerment.
  • Develop rapport with youth attending the Hub during drop-in hours and form insights about their unique and shared developmental needs and interests.
  • Monitor trends, social dynamics, and common challenges among youth.
  • Provide assistance to youth who may come to the Hub in crisis, in search of support, counselling, guidance, or safety.
  • Proactively de-escalate and manage interpersonal conflicts among youth during drop-in programming, using trauma-informed, and restorative approaches to support a safe and respectful environment.
  • Facilitate and support youth engagement in thoughtful discussions related to social and political issues that influence their communities and individual lived experiences.
  • Engage youth in volunteering opportunities and coordinate these activities with the Volunteer Coordinator.

Program Implementation & Evaluation

  • Engage in ongoing consultation with youth during drop-in programming and Youth Advisory Committee meetings to inform the development of relevant programming and resource offerings.
  • Participate in meetings with the Hub Manager and community partners to discuss potential partnership opportunities for introducing new programming to the Hub.
  • Collaborate with organization-wide colleagues, and community partners to co-develop and deliver programming that reflects youth needs and interests, enhances access to care, and addresses identified service gaps.
  • Support the Hub Manager in the collection, input, and coordination of monthly program data to inform program planning, evaluation, and funding reports.
  • Assist in monitoring and analyzing program data to assess effectiveness, identify service gaps, and support continuous quality improvement.
  • Contribute to evaluation processes by gathering qualitative and quantitative feedback from youth to support evidence-based decision-making and reporting.

Youth Advisory Committee Co-Lead

  • Act as the Youth Advisory Committee co-lead in collaboration with the Hub’s Peer Support Worker.
  • Develop strategies to engage youth with diverse perspectives, skills, and abilities, as well as different socio-demographic characteristics.
  • Assist youth with developing programming ideas and adopting leadership roles in the implementation of their ideas.
  • Offer ongoing opportunities for youths to contribute to Hub programming.
  • Ensure youth have opportunities to share their experiences with the Youth Advisory Committee and other Hub staff members.
  • Attend regular YWHO communities of practice meetings on behalf of the Hub.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must possess a diploma or bachelor’s degree in a relevant social services field. Having a Child and Youth Care degree is most preferrable.

SKILLS & ASSETS

  • Excellent communication/interpersonal skills.
  • A proponent of multi-disciplinary collaboration.
  • Able to work well in a team environment, ensuring coordination between organizations’ initiatives
  • A working knowledge of and experience with providing wraparound/integrated services.
  • Work experience in social services or related field, providing empowermentbased, youth-led services.
  • Paid work experience in a life-space setting is essential (i.e. school, hospital, community centre, residential care facility, custodial setting, child welfare setting)
  • Familiarity with anti-oppression and inclusion practices, including knowledge of supporting 2SLGBTQ+ youth, Indigenous youth, and those facing intersectional systemic challenges.
  • Ability to establish trusting relationships with youth while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.
  • Ability to create a non-judgmental, inclusive, youth-friendly environment where young people feel valued.
  • Experience with program development and utilizing a responsive approach to programming is a highly valued asset.
  • Have comprehensive computer experience in Microsoft Office
  • Able to manage various responsibilities while working in a fast-paced and dynamic environment
  • A satisfactory and current Vulnerable Sector Screening is a requirement

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Can work variable hours that might include evenings, weekends and weekdays depending on work demands.
  • Must be able to participate in team meetings, supervision and training sessions as required.
  • Valid First Aid & CPR certificate or willingness to obtain.
