Position: Full-Time contract-Settlement Worker in Schools

Location: Varies in York Region

Report to: SWIS Manager

Application Deadline: August 31, 2026

Contract end date: March 31, 2027

Expected Compensation:

Gross salary will be $ 29.13 per hour based on 37.5 hours per week. All payments are subject to the required statutory employee deductions.

Position Overview:

The SWIS Worker South Asian (Tamil/ Hindi/ Urdu), provides support to newcomer students and their families, helping them navigate and integrate into the Canadian education system. The role includes working closely with schools, community organizations, and families to ensure the successful transition and settlement of immigrant and refugee students.

Reporting to Manager, of Settlement Workers in Schools, you will work to provide front line services to our clients, solidify and strengthen our existing programs and work towards expanding our impact, so we are able to serve all newcomers in York Region public and catholic schools, aligned to our values.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provides direct settlement services for newcomer students and their families. The services include information and referrals, interpretation and translation, advocacy and access to services, guidance and support and adjustment counselling.
  • Plans and organize newcomer orientation, group information sessions, community and family education workshops, and other settlement-related activities in collaboration with school staff.
  • Encourages and supports newcomer students and their families in participating in school activities.
  • Identifies and assesses settlement needs of newcomer students and their families and links them with available community resources.
  • Participates in and contributes to school activities and case conferences.
  • Collaborate with school principals, guidance and ESL teachers and other designated people to integrate newcomer students and their families into the school system. Utilizes resources in the schools.
  • Collaborates with staff in other CCSYR programs, if necessary, to ensure that the client receives appropriate services.
  • Plans and implements summer programs and activities for newcomer families.
  • Prepares and submits statistics and reports of the outcomes. Contributes to resources development.
  • Participate in team meetings and agency staff meetings.
  • Follows risk management practices including Work from Home, and safety protocols when reporting to the schools and school boards.
  • Perform related duties as requested by the Program Manager and/or Program Coordinator.

Skills:

  • Strong understanding of the settlement needs of immigrant and refugee families.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and cultural competency skills.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Fluency in English and South Asian languages (Urdu, Hindi).
  • Knowledge of Canadian educational systems and settlement resources.
  • Ability to build and maintain strong, ongoing partnerships within communities.
  • Ability to work well individually and collaboratively as part of teams.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to multitask and adhere to strict deadlines.
  • Adept with technology and communication platforms.
  • Comfort with facilitation, giving presentations and excellent public speaking skills.
  • Extensive knowledge of community services, immigration, settlement sector and the public education system are considered an Asset.

Other:

  • Understanding of Anti-Oppression and Anti-Racism Frameworks is considered an Asset.
  • Understanding and strict adherence to Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA).
  • Participate in agency fundraising activities as deemed appropriate and necessary.
  • A valid drivers’ license, access to a reliable vehicle and relevant insurance, is mandatory.
  • The incumbent must be bondable and cleared by a police reference check.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum a diploma in Social Studies, Immigration, Social Services, Settlement counselling or a related discipline OR a combination of post-secondary education and settlement related experience.
  • Registration with a professional college (e.g., College of Social Workers) is considered an asset.
  • A minimum of 1 year’s work experience in a social service setting, settlement and/or community work’ sectors.

Physical requirements:

  • Work in a multi-service office environment staffed largely by people from diverse cultures.
  • Duties can involve stress in dealing meeting deadlines, dealing with sensitive and confidential issues, preparing and submitting accurate reports.
  • Confidentiality regarding the agency’s clients and business plan is an absolute requirement.
  • The incumbent in this position frequently communicates with internal and external stakeholders who require information or need support in the community. Must display professionalism and political correctness.

Work is performed in standard office or school environment.

Travel within York Region to schools, satellite offices or as assigned.

Flexibility regarding assigned work hours and locations, willing to work some evenings and/or weekends.
