Position Title: Senior Graphic Designer

Organization: Scarborough Campus Students' Union (SCSU)

Position Type: Full-time, member of Local 102, Union Food and Commercial Workers

Compensation: $65,000+ Comprehensive Benefits

Reports to: SCSU Executive Director

Location: Hybrid work environment with the expectation of coming in office 4 days a week.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A post-secondary education.
  • Expert using the latest Adobe Creative Suite, specifically Illustrator and InDesign.
  • Proficiency in the current Social Media Platforms, specifically Instagram, Twitter, Facebook (Pages) and TikTok.
  • Understanding branding aesthetic and application specifically to the SCSU brand.
  • Clean and precise design skills and concept development with accompanying experience in typesetting and print production.
  • Attention to detail and creative ingenuity are a must.
  • Film and photography post-production editing are an asset.
  • Experience in marketing and promotion are an asset.
  • Ability to take direction and meet tight deadlines. Works well under pressure.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Must be able to work independently with little supervision.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

DUTIES:

Under the primary guidance of the SCSU Executive Director, the Senior Graphic Designer will:

  • Work with the SCSU Executives on marketing material for campaigns, events and services.
  • Develop concepts and design materials including e-newsletters, flyers, posters, banners etc.
  • Assist the SCSU Executives with marketing, brainstorming and advertising strategies.
  • Design/layout of web banners and graphic elements of emails and other digital communication assets
  • Proofread to produce accurate and high-quality work.
  • Present finalized ideas, designs and concepts to Executives.
  • Ensure that the material is produced in a timely fashion.
  • Create electronically designed page layouts and may develop web-based graphics.
  • From time to time may perform location photography and may perform photo processing.
  • Generally carry out all other functions as may be required from time to time by the SCSU Executive Director.
  • Operate in accordance with the SCSU By-laws and Policies.
  • When requested to do so, attend SCSU Board of Directors and Executive Committee Meetings.
  • Protect the property of SCSU at all times.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

Recognizing that the Senior Graphic Designer's functions embrace a broad range of roles and responsibilities, it is important to note that not all functions are contained within this definition, and the position itself should be ever changing and adaptive. Nevertheless, specific roles and responsibilities allocated to this position include, but are not limited to the following:

SCSU Graphic Design

  • Work with the SCSU Executives on marketing material for campaigns, events and services; understanding and interpreting the SCSU executives needs and developing a concept to suit their purpose.
  • Thinking creatively to produce new ideas and concepts and to produce visual solutions to our membership using a mix of creative skills and commercial awareness.
  • Contributing ideas and design artwork to the material, while using innovation to design material.
  • Work on multiple tasks with a restricted time period using a wide range of medias, including photography and computer aided design.
  • Illustrates concept by designing rough layout of art and copy regarding arrangement, size, type size and style, and related aesthetic concepts.
  • Developing design briefs by gathering information and data through research.
  • Working with a wide range of media, including photography and computer-aided design (CAD).
  • Keeping up-to-date with emerging technologies in new media, particularly design programs such as but not limited to Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Dreamweaver and Flash;
  • Assists SCSU Executives in copywriting as necessary in producing content for marketing material.
  • Design different types of layouts & illustrations, web design layout & typography.
  • Creates professional designs and layouts for promotional materials including direct mailings, handouts, advertisements, posters, signs, logos, and other visual layouts.
  • Prepare new and unique illustrations, innovative layout prints and rough sketches of presentation and organization brochures and designs graphics for website in line with branding guidelines.
  • Under guidance of the SCSU Orientation Committee; design the annual Orientation Logo, brochure material, sponsorship packages, t-shirt designs, Orientation Web Page, and any other SCSU Orientation marketing material.
  • Awareness of printing techniques, types of paper or canvas (size, weight) and display options (light box, interactive display), cutting and finalizing prints for display.
  • Knowledge of photography and photography editing, producing accurate and high quality work.
  • Obtains approval of all design material from the SCSU President and Executive Director by submitting rough layout for approval.

SCSU Restaurants Incorporated (SRI) Graphic Design

  • Assist the Executive Director and 1265 Bistro Manager in producing effective marketing material for the restaurant.
  • Develop and maintain 1265 Bistro's Den Menu as needed.
  • Obtains approval of all design material from the Executive Director and 1265 Bistro Manager by submitting rough layout for approval.

Web Design/ Online Marketing Material

  • Work with the SCSU Webmaster to ensure the maintenance/updating of the SCSU and 1265 Bistro web pages.
  • Design/layout of web banners and graphic elements of emails and other digital communication assets
  • Assist the SCSU Executives in producing material for Web Marketing and Social Media Marketing.

Supervisory

  • Supervise all the part-time staff under the purview of the Graphics, Publications and Marketing team

Additional Responsibilities

  • Sits on ad-hoc marketing committees.
  • Any committees designated by the SCSU Executive Director and SCSU Executive Committee.
  • Other duties related to SCSU business as assigned.
