Position Summary

The Senior Finance Officer plays a key role in supporting the daily accounting and financial processes at the Indigenous Prosperity Foundation. This includes tracking project expenses, managing budgets, ensuring compliance with financial policies, and assisting with financial reporting. The role involves close collaboration with internal teams and external stakeholders to maintain accurate records, support budgeting efforts, and help ensure transparency and accountability in IPF’s financial operations.

Key Responsibilities

Project Accounting

  • Ensure accurate reflection of project financial data in monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Monitor projects financials to correct cost allocations and verify accuracy.
  • Input and update budget and forecast data for multiple projects throughout their lifecycle.
  • Contribute to post-project reviews, analyzing performance trends, and providing financial insights.
  • Forecast monthly project costs to support decision-making and annual budget objectives.
  • Assist in the development and financial components of project and funding proposals.
  • Prepare timely financial reports for funders and the IPF Board of Directors.

General Accounting (Shared Services)

  • Support management in developing and implementing policies, processes, and procedures for effective accounting and documentation.
  • Reconcile and analyze balance sheet accounts, aiding the month-end and quarter-end close process.
  • Collaborate with NACCA to align processes and reporting.
  • Manage day-to-day general ledger transactions and journal entries.
  • Coordinate with NACCA and other departments to ensure accurate financial data and support shared services.
  • Assist the team with financial reports and analysis for the IPF Board of Directors.
  • Perform bank reconciliations, contract management, and support HST filings.
  • Ensure donation receipts are processed on time and other tax matters as they relate to a registered charity.
  • Ensure the accuracy of T3010 returns.
  • Assist with year-end audits and participate in special projects or ad hoc analyses and administrative tasks as needed.

  • Demonstrate discretion in handling confidential and sensitive information.
  • May be requested to undertake other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Education

  • This role requires a University Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field.
  • While a post-secondary education is preferred, candidates with a combination of relevant experience and education may also be considered.

Experience

  • Minimum five (5) years of progressive experience working in finance or accounting.
  • Prior experience working with a start-up organization and/or charitable foundation is preferred.
  • Prior experience working with Indigenous communities and/or organization is preferred.

Abilities, Skills and Knowledge

  • Thorough knowledge of generally accepted accounting theories, principles, methods, practices, and terminology.
  • Knowledge of the application of data processing and terminology as it applies to maintaining financial control and accounting records.
  • Knowledge of techniques commonly used in locating errors in accounting records.
  • Ability to interpret and analyze financial statements.
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, data tables, advanced functions, and data models).

Primary Location: Ottawa, Ontario. IPF operates on a hybrid work model. Remote work arrangements may be considered based on organizational needs and role responsibilities.
