Habitat for Humanity Greater Ottawa is a registered Canadian charitable organization that brings communities together to help families build strength, stability, and self-reliance through affordable homeownership. We are a land developer, a home builder, a fundraiser, and a mortgage holder. Since 1993, Habitat Greater Ottawa has empowered families and communities in Ottawa and surrounding areas through building safe and affordable homes that provide a solid foundation for local families.

In support of our homebuilding operations, Habitat Greater Ottawa operates a retail home improvement store called Habitat ReStore, which sells donated home furnishings, appliances, and renovation materials, with all proceeds helping us build more homes for local families.

The Role

The Senior Director of Operations works closely with the CEO to scale the organization and increase the number of families served per year and is a dynamic and highly motivated member of Habitat for Humanity Greater Ottawa’s leadership team.

Reporting to the CEO, the Senior Director of Operations is responsible for leading Habitat Greater Ottawa’s Operational Planning, Finance, Technology, Human Resources and Facilities. They will foster a positive, high-performance culture while inspiring and driving growth and productivity.

Key Responsibilities

1. Operational Leadership

  • In collaboration with the CEO, lead the development, execution and monitoring of the annual operational plan.
  • Establish a clearly defined and effective course of action for self and others to accomplish short-term and long-term work goals.
  • Provide strategic guidance to drive organizational growth, scalability and continuous improvement.
  • Oversee daily operations, lead continuous improvement initiatives and ensure alignment across Finance, HR, Technology and Facilities.
  • In collaboration with the CEO, develop and execute change management initiatives.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to the CEO and the leadership team providing advice and innovative strategies to ensure operational excellence.
  • Provide creative, strategic leadership in operational program development, management and delivery.

2. Financial Strategic Management

  • Provide oversight of the finance team, ensuring strong internal controls and compliance with legislation.
  • Oversee the annual audit including working papers and ensuring all backup documentation is available.
  • Provide financial advice to the CEO on matters of policy, guidelines, and procedures.
  • Lead the financial and strategic evaluation of opportunities, partnerships, and initiatives.
  • Develop and communicate the short-term and long-term financial implications of opportunities for the organization.
  • Develop and present recurring and ad hoc reports for the Finance Committee and Board of Directors.
  • Provide staff support and guidance to the Finance Committee and respond to their requests.
  • Lead the annual budgeting aligned to the operational plan.
  • Oversee the execution and reporting on the annual budget.
  • Ensure all government and funder remittances and reports are submitted in a timely and effective manner (including the issuance of charitable receipts; T3010, EHT, WSIB, etc.).
  • Evaluate and provide financial analysis and insight related to development of new opportunities and to ensure long-term financial sustainability.
  • Oversee the work of the Director of Corporate Services.

3. Human Resources

  • In collaboration with the CEO, align staff performance metrics with the operational plan and ensure an effective performance appraisal process is in place.
  • Oversee HR policies, ensuring compliance with legislation and consistent application across the organization.
  • Foster a collaborative, inclusive and high-performance culture.
  • Oversee the work of the Administrative Coordinator and Volunteer Coordinator.
  • Oversee all staff internal communications.

4. Facilities

  • Oversee the management of all Habitat facilities including ReStores and offices.
  • Oversee property management contracts for all Habitat facilities.
  • Manage the negotiations and legal requirements for any new facilities.

5. Technology

  • Provide strategic oversight and direction over Habitat Greater Ottawa’s IT systems and architecture.
  • Manage the technology budget for the organization.
  • Secure and oversee the management of any outsourced technology service providers.
  • Ensure cybersecurity measures are implemented and staff are compliant with policies.
  • Ensure all technology policies are current and aligned with best practices.

Importantly, the successful Senior Director of Operations will have the skills, sensitivity, and personal confidence to tap into the power that each member of the team brings to this mission. The following competencies are required:

  • Post-secondary education in Business, HR, Accounting, Finance or Financial Management.
  • CPA designation (active or inactive).
  • A minimum 5+ years of progressive experience in management.
  • Demonstrated people management experience.
  • Demonstrated progressive experience in project management.
  • Strong working knowledge of other operations functions including, operational planning, human resources, IT, facilities.
  • Ability to organize and manage a diverse range of assignments and projects with high efficiency, attention to detail and analytical skills.
  • Excellent communications skills, both oral and written in English.
  • Excellent executive and/or governance management skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to foster collaboration and to work as part of a team or independently with minimum supervision.
  • Excellent skills in Microsoft Office Suite products: Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint) SharePoint.
  • Experience with ADP and QuickBooks.
  • Proficiency with Raiser’s Edge would be considered an asset.
  • French language proficiency would be an asset.
  • Ability to maintain a flexible schedule, including some evenings and weekends, with access to vehicle.

Working Conditions

  • The successful candidate is expected to work/live in Ottawa and/or the surrounding area.
  • Due to the nature of this role, the incumbent must be available to work onsite at 3 Iber Road. Parking is available at no cost. Due to the nature of the organization, it can be expected at times to travel to the office, ReStores, and our build site.

The salary band for this role is between $108,000 and $130,000 per annum based on experience. Habitat Greater Ottawa also offers a comprehensive health benefits plan, vacation and flexible personal days.
