
SEEKING EXCEPTIONAL INDIVIDUALS TO JOIN OUR BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Nelson House of Ottawa Carleton is seeking four exceptional individuals of all ages and from diverse backgrounds to join our Board of Directors. Established in 1992, Nelson House is a non-profit shelter that provides emergency shelter and social services for individuals and families who are fleeing abuse in their lives. Nelson House also works with other groups and individuals to end violence and promote safety. The Board plays a critical role in the governance of Nelson House and has regular Board meetings monthly. Board members also participate in the Board’s committees including the Governance, Finance, Human Resources, and Fundraising Committees. Meetings are currently held alternatively in person and virtually. The approximate time commitment is 4-6 hours/month.
Qualifications:
• Commitment to promoting equity and inclusion, feminist analysis and practice;
• Willingness to participate in ongoing Board work and taking on executive positions on the Board (after
receiving training and completing job shadowing).
• Available to serve on the Board for a minimum of two years.
• Ability to work well in a diverse and collaborative environment.
Assets/experience desired include:
• Knowledge of issues related to abuse and violence.
• Well connected within the Ottawa community.
• Previous non-profit Board experience as a treasurer or member of a finance committee.
• Financial management and accounting experience including familiarity with investment strategy.
• Fundraising and marketing experience.
• Human resources or labor relations experience.
