Hours: Full-time, 37.5 hours (primarily remote)
Shift: 11am - 7pm 5 days/week, will include some weekends
Reports to: Executive Director
Probation Period: 4 months
About Toronto Cat Rescue:
Toronto Cat Rescue (TCR) is a volunteer-driven, registered charity that rescues over 2500 cats each year through the efforts of over 1,000 dedicated volunteers. TCR is not a shelter, but a network of foster homes that stretches throughout the Greater Toronto Area, and Region of Waterloo. We take in cats who are then socialized and housed in foster homes until they are ready for adoption.
About the position:
Toronto Cat Rescue is seeking a compassionate, detail-oriented RVT, Foster Program Manager. The Foster Program Manager is a senior leadership role responsible for the strategic oversight, growth, and day-to-day success of the organization’s cat foster program in GTA and Region of Waterloo. This position leads and supports a network of volunteer Foster Coordinators and foster homes, ensuring cats receive timely, high-quality care while moving efficiently through the foster system.
Bringing strong Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) expertise, the role partners closely with medical and operations teams to manage medical and behavioural cases, respond to foster emergencies, and provide practical guidance to volunteers. The Foster Program Manager also plays a key role in volunteer recruitment, onboarding, training, and retention, while maintaining accurate records, breaking down silos across departments, and continuously improving foster program effectiveness for both cats and the people who care for them.
Key Responsibilities
Foster Program Leadership
- Lead, mentor, and support volunteer Foster Coordinators through regular check-ins and virtual/in-person meetings, managing all facets of the cat program: behaviour, enrichment, medical, volunteers
- Oversee continuous recruitment and onboarding of volunteer Foster Coordinators and foster homes to maintain and grow capacity
- Manage and mentor the New Foster Home Screening team to ensure appropriate recruitment, screening and onboarding of new foster families, supporting the ongoing development of the Foster Program
- Ensure the foster program is effective, responsive, and supportive for both cats and foster volunteers
- Monitor cats in foster care to ensure appropriate care progression, and timely movement through the program to reduce length of stay
- Maintain the centralized repository of foster-related information
- Liaise with Foster Support & Engagement Coordinator, Adoptions Manager and Intake Manager to break down silos, and ensure alignment across departments
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date cat records in the PetPoint CRM as required
Medical & Emergency Support (RVT Focus)
- Collaborate closely with the Medical Program Manager (RVT) on medical and behavioural foster cases
- Assist with foster emergencies, including triage, decision-making, and guidance to volunteers
- Apply RVT expertise to assess situations, provide practical guidance, and escalate appropriately
Volunteer Management
- Support and mentor foster program leads
- Assist with volunteer interviewing, training, workload management, and performance support as needed
- Act as the primary contact for foster-related inquiries from other program area leads
- Identify and proactively address volunteer coverage gaps to ensure smooth operations
- Build strong, respectful working relationships with key volunteers and provide ongoing guidance and support
Qualifications & Requirements
- Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) in good standing in Ontario is a mandatory requirement for this position
- Minimum 3 years of experience shelter/rescue medicine or a high-volume veterinary environment
- Strong working knowledge of feline health conditions and common behavioural concerns
- Proven ability to make sound decisions under pressure and triage urgent situations effectively
- Experience working with and managing volunteers
- Excellent communication and people-management skills
- Proficient with digital tools for communication, record-keeping, and case tracking.
- Highly organized, proactive, and action-oriented, with the ability to balance long-term goals and daily operations
- Strong problem-solving and de-escalation skills in stressful situations
- Ability to manage competing priorities independently and as part of a team
- Experience with Google Workspace (G Suite) is an asset
- Occasional in-person or on-site responsibilities (training sessions, meetings, volunteer and staff events)
Work Environment & Schedule
- Approximately 80% remote with flexible hours, with the day starting at 11am
- Weekend work may be required in the busy season and in urgent situations
- Occasional in-person or on-site responsibilities (large intakes, foster home visits for assessment and guidance, volunteer and staff events)
Compensation
Full time salary of $60- $63,000 per year commensurate with level of education, credentials, and experience. TCR also offers paid vacation and a benefit plan. There might be opportunity for future growth in this position.
