Building Up is Canada’s largest construction social enterprise. We are also a leading contractor in the GTA for deep green energy retrofit projects, providing clients with comprehensive solutions for Air Tightness Improvement as well as Energy & GHG Reductions.

About The Role

We are looking for a Renovation Supervisor - General Carpenter who has a passion for Building Up’s mission to lead home renovation and energy retrofit projects from our sites. This role will be expected to both produce on the tools as well as lead our crew from the site. This role involves having a deep understanding of the project, a strong ability to plan, produce, lead/drive and supervise daily operations of our crew, ensuring quality control and maintaining safety standards. This role will work closely with the Project Management team to lead all site production (crew and subcontractor work) to ensure that projects are delivered on time, on budget and on scope. This person will be goal-oriented, and comfortable with accountability of deliverables.

Wage: $35 to $45/ hour (depending on skills and experience)
Employment: Full-time, permanent
Working hours: 30-44 hours/week, Monday - Friday
Location: Construction sites within the GTA

Required Experience & Qualifications:

  • Experience of at least 10 years working in the construction industry
  • 2+ years of experience leading a full home renovation, including:
    • Interior demolition
    • Framing and structural work
    • New interior finishes (flooring, doors, millwork, finish carpentry, etc.).
    • Finishing Work (Painting, Drywall Finish)
  • 2+ years of experience leading deep green energy retrofits, including:
    • Interior air barrier and insulation
    • Installation of new windows and doors tied into the air barrier
    • Meeting blower door test, Air Tightness Improvement, Energy reduction and GHG reduction targets
  • Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals
  • Strong knowledge of building codes, OSHA regulations, and maintenance best practices
  • Confident using project management software (BuilderTrend experience is an asset)
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills for clients, supervisors and trainees
  • Reliable, proactive and supportive team member

Other Requirements:

  • A driver’s license and own vehicle are mandatory (owning a truck is an asset)
  • Required tools (Tape Measure, Speed Square, Knife, Hammer, Nail Puller, Tool Belt, Cordless Circular Saw, Mitre Saw, Jig Saw, Cordless Reciprocating Saw, Cordless Oscillating Multi-Tool, Cordless Impact Driver, Torpedo Level, Cordless Angle Grinder, Cordless Hammer Drill)
  • Ability to regularly lift 50 pounds (lift, push, pull, or carry objects)

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Project Ownership: Review, approve and take ownership of your project's schedules, scopes and crews. This is your project to manage from the site - you own getting the project done on time, scope and within the crew's budget.

  • Project Schedule/Production: Take accountability for delivering the schedule by actively working on the tools and leading the crew. Flag the project manager with potential changes that may need to be made to ensure we have an accurate schedule in place and the crew/resources you need to hit your targets.
  • Work plans/Crew Management: Set weekly targets/work plans with the PM office and lead daily site meetings and toolbox talks with the crew to set a clear plan/daily punchlists that meet weekly targets. Inform the PM team of other resources you may need to hit your targets.
  • Site Management: Responsible for maintaining an organized and clean job site.
  • Subs: Review sub scopes, and have a deep understanding of the work that subs need to do so are prepared to guide them on site and sign off on quality to PM.
  • Materials: Build and execute material takeoffs with the PM office. Plan and order materials ahead of time. Use the material spec list budget, and stay within budget. *Large & speciality orders are done by the PM office.
  • Tools & Equipment: Plan and coordinate your tools and equipment based on monthly and weekly work plans.
  • Quality Control: Proactively minimize deficiencies by ensuring the crew is clear on the work assigned. Double-check all work produced and immediately address deficiencies to prevent production delays. Ensures project and staff adhere to the Ontario Building Code, municipal zoning requirements.
  • Daily Logistics & Updates: Ensure daily logs are completed, time sheets are approved, and pictures are uploaded.
  • Health & Safety - Ensure sites are always run safely and meet OHS&A and Building Up Health and Safety Policies and Procedures.
  • Customer Service: Provide professional and clear communication to clients, and tenants.
