Job Posting – Regional Organizing Coordinator / Director of SEIU 2 Organizing Institute

The Service Employees International Union 2 (SEIU 2) is a 20,000-member organization that represents workers in British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. We are currently seeking an experienced senior-level organizer to lead our external organizing team in Ontario and to oversee and direct our national Organizing Institute.

THE POSITION: This is a dual role position. The Organizing Coordinator for Ontario is responsible for managing unionized employees, contract organizers and member organizers in the execution of external organizing campaigns. Organizing Coordinator’s must have a sophisticated understanding of the various methodologies used by SEIU for membership growth including corporate campaigns and effective labour board election strategies. Additionally, Organizing Coordinators assist with the development and implementation of internal contract action campaigns and the coordination of strikes. As a management position, Organizing Coordinators work with the National Organizing Director and Officers to develop a national organizing plan and budget.

As the Director of the SEIU 2 Organizing Institute you will develop curriculum, train educators and deliver courses that expand the capacity of the SEIU 2 organizing department. The Organizing Institute is a staff development tool for all levels of organizers and uses a variety of teaching methods based on the experience level of participants. The curriculum must constantly evolve to reflect the various industries and employers targeted by the Union as well as changes to provincial labour laws.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Five years experience working in a senior-level organizing position.
  • Five years experience managing and directing staff.
  • Experience in developing curriculum and delivering labour education including fluency in teaching methodology.
  • Demonstrated success executing large private sector labour board election campaigns.
  • Demonstrated success executing non-traditional organizing campaigns (example comprehensive corporate campaigns)
  • Experience understanding case law as it pertains to all aspects of union organizing.
  • Experience developing multi-sector regional organizing plans and budgets.
  • Experience developing and running internal campaigns such as contract action campaigns.
  • Experience working in other areas of the Union (servicing, education, internal) a plus.
  • Master’s degree.
  • Driver’s license, auto insurance and automobile.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS: This is a coordinator position. Salary is based on experience and there is a fully employer-paid family health, dental and vision insurance and a fully employer- paid defined benefit pension plan.
