Position Title: Recreation and Leisure /Activity Assistant Student Placement

End Date: Friday, December 19, 2025
Placement Hours: Based on placement requirements
Reports to: Living well Manager
Position Summary:
This placement offers students valuable hands-on experience assessing the needs, preferences, and abilities of a diverse senior population, and designing programs that enhance engagement, inclusion, and quality of life. Through supervised practice, students will develop the skills and confidence needed to create positive, supportive environments for seniors.
Responsibilities:

Assist with planning, creating, delivering, and evaluating recreation, leisure, and wellness programs.

Support daily program operations, including set-up, facilitation, clean-up, and related administrative tasks (e.g., materials preparation, attendance, feedback).

Help develop inclusive, engaging activities that reflect participants’ diverse needs, abilities, and interests.

Promote meaningful engagement, social connection, and well-being for aging adults.

Provide general support to program staff as needed to ensure quality service.
Skills & Qualifications:

Enrolled in an approved Recreation and Leisure, Activity Assistant Gerontology, or related program with a community placement component.

Ability to plan and facilitate group activities, especially for older adults.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills; able to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.

Basic understanding of recreational, social, or therapeutic programming for seniors (an asset).

Knowledge of the aging process, including common health conditions affecting older adults.

Interest, experience, or training in areas such as music, arts and crafts, fitness, or adapted therapeutic activities.

Comfort and sensitivity in working with seniors who may be frail, have cognitive impairments, or live with dementia.

Ability to perform light physical work (e.g., assisting with mobility, pushing wheelchairs, setting up program equipment).

Reliable, adaptable, and eager to learn.
Working Conditions:

Sitting in front of the computer terminal for long periods of time

May have frequent work interruptions
Supervision and Evaluation:

Supervision and support will be provided by the Living Well Manager.
Other:

Vulnerable Service Sector Check screening is mandatory.

Proof of full vaccination or Medical Exemption Certificate is mandatory.
