Board / Committee Member
Unpaid Volunteer Position

The Holland Bloorview Research Ethics Board (REB) is currently seeking a legal member who is a lawyer with experience in Healthcare and privacy issues.

The legal member must not be a current employee of Holland Bloorview and is asked to serve a three-year term, with the possibility of renewal. Service on the REB is voluntary. The REB consists of a body of researchers, community members, and others with specific expertise (e.g. in ethics, in relevant research disciplines) established by the institution to review the ethical acceptability of all research involving humans (including their biological specimens and/or data) conducted at Holland Bloorview or by staff of Holland Bloorview, and the Bloorview Research Institute.

The REB has the authority to approve, reject, request modifications to, or terminate any proposed or ongoing research.

For the integrity of the research ethics review process, and to safeguard public trust in the process of review, the REB operates effectively and independently in its decision making and is required to operate free from inappropriate influence, including situations of real, potential or perceived conflict of interest.

What does the position look like?

REB members are volunteers who review applications for ethical acceptability of research, attend REB meetings, vote on REB decisions and establish quorum. REB members are expected to attend meetings which are held remotely every second Monday of each month and are scheduled for 2 hours. The meeting may include between 1 to 3 initial applications, along with occasional annual renewals, amendments, responses and other applications.

REB members attending an REB meeting are expected to:
• review the relevant materials submitted for each item under review or consideration by the REB;
• submit comments within the electronic REB system in a timely manner;
• be prepared to discuss each agenda item and provide input at the Full Board meeting; and
• liaise with their designated alternate member to ensure quorum is achieved at monthly meetings

What is required?

Each REB member is expected to contribute to the review of an application based on their individual qualifications and experience, and role on the REB. Legal members provide input regarding their knowledge of relevant laws (including health, privacy, and consent and capacity). All REB members contribute to the ethical evaluation of the application, and should advise the REB Chair if they feel additional expertise is required to assess the ethical acceptability of an application. This will be for a 3-year term with the possibility of renewal.

Ideal experience and skills include:
• Familiarity with the structure of a research protocol;
• Comfortable contributing to discussions within the context of the REB meetings, which consist of physicians and scientists; and
• Previous experience as a legal advisor in Healthcare.

Holland Bloorview is committed to fostering a climate of inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility. We welcome and respect the diversity of all members of our research community. We seek to create and support an inclusive culture for our clients, families, research scientists, staff, participants, trainees, volunteers, trustees, and partners. Holland Bloorview is committed to a fair assessment of a candidate's abilities, and consideration for diversity of thought, method, and experience. We encourage applications from individuals who identify as Black, Indigenous and other racialized persons; women; persons with disabilities; the LGBTQIA2S+ community; as well as others who may contribute to further diversification of ideas within our community.
