Purpose:

Effect Hope is scaling project delivery across Africa and India and needs a hands‑on Project Accountant to lead and strengthen project‑level budgeting, multi‑currency accounting, partner reporting, and grant compliance. You will be the finance point‑person for assigned projects, working closely with International Programs, Fund Development and Marketing teams, partner organizations, and auditors to ensure timely, accurate, and compliant financial management from initiation to close‑out. You will add value at the project finance level through preparation, reporting, and review cycles.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Project setup & budgeting

  • Partner with teams to translate scopes of work into project budgets, workplans, and financial tracking models; set up project structures, coding, and documentation on SharePoint, Financial Edge and Raisers Edge
  • Align project budgets to donor agreements and internal approvals; maintain change logs for amendments.
  • Develop and maintain project/activity financial reports that facilitate fundraising and supports the needs of the fundraising team.
  • Model scenarios (phasing, forex, funding) and advise on financial implications for delivery and cash flow.

Grant compliance & partner support

  • Interpret funding agreements to build calendars for narrative/financial reports, cash‑flow forecasts, and advance schedules; track deliverables and follow up with partners.
  • Provide partners with templates and guidance for monthly/quarterly variance reporting, document retention, and audit readiness; support local capacity strengthening.
  • Monitor covenant/compliance status and escalate risks with clear action plans.

Multi‑currency accounting & remittances

  • Prepare and reconcile cross‑border remittances (e.g., BDT, USD, EUR) to budgets; apply FX rates and document realized/unrealized impacts; ensure approvals and banking documentation are complete.
  • Monitor cash positions, outstanding advances, and fund requests; recommend timing of transfers to optimize FX/cash management in line with project cash‑flows.

Financial reporting & controls

  • Produce monthly project financial statements (actuals vs. budget), variance analyses, and management commentary; escalate risks and corrective actions.
  • Maintain audit trails and supporting documents (RE→FE postings, bank reconciliations, partner ledgers) and ensure adherence to, and strengthening of, internal control SOPs.
  • Implement and own document management and access controls in SharePoint; keep project sites up‑to‑date.

Audit coordination & close‑out

  • Coordinate special purpose and annual audits with external firms and partners (request lists, samples, confirmations); resolve findings and track management action plans.
  • Lead financial close‑out, asset disposition documentation, and retention schedules as required by funding agreements and policies.

Process improvement

  • Contribute to standardizing project finance SOPs (remittances, reporting, documentation) and improving timeliness and quality of project reviews.
  • Provide practical training to project managers and partners on templates, tools, and compliance requirements.
  • Contribute to tool and system optimizations.

QUALIFICATIONS/QUALITIES

  • CPA (or international equivalent) preferred; strong grounding in not‑for‑profit/fund accounting.
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including 2+ years in project/grant accounting with international programs.
  • Demonstrated experience with multi‑currency accounting, cross‑border remittances, and donor reporting.
  • Familiarity with Blackbaud Raiser’s Edge/Financial Edge (or equivalent ERP), Microsoft 365 (Excel, SharePoint, Teams) is preferred
  • Experience coordinating audits and responding to findings in a not-for-profit or charity. Experience in an International Development NGO is an asset.
  • Excellent written/verbal communication; ability to collaborate across time zones with finance and program teams.
  • Ability and willingness to undertake overseas travel

  • Collaboration with International Programs, Fund Development and Marketing Teams and external partners to meet contractual obligations.

Key Deliverables & KPIs

  • On‑time submission of all financial reports to donors/partners per agreement schedules; clean audit outcomes with timely resolution of findings.
  • Monthly project dashboards (actuals vs. budget, commitments, advances/settlements, FX impact) distributed to project managers and leadership.
  • Document completeness and retention (supporting vouchers, reconciliations, approvals) meeting audit standards.
  • Cycle‑time improvement in remittance processing and partner variance review.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Hybrid work in Canada; ability to collaborate across African and Indian time zones.
  • Occasional travel (e.g. partner visits, audits) as project needs and safety permit.
