About the Role

Environmental Defence Canada (EDC) is a leading Canadian environmental advocacy organization that works with government, industry and individuals to defend clean water, a safe climate and healthy communities. You will be joining a mission-oriented organization with solution-oriented team members who strive to improve our communities and environment. This is a full-time position with 4 weeks vacation, half-day Fridays between Canada Day and Labour Day, a benefits program and an RRSP matching program. The salary range is $70,000-$75,000. This role will be reporting to the Programs Director.

Purpose of the Role

We are seeking an experienced Program Manager to add capacity to Environmental Defence’s efforts to advocate for environmental laws, regulations and policies with the Federal government in Ottawa. This role is focused on developing and executing on government relations efforts with the government officials in Ottawa.

The Program Manager will help identify key contacts in the federal government, build relationships with allies and decision makers, and lead the development of government relations strategies for Environmental Defence’s policy advocacy efforts with the federal government. The government relations manager will work closely with Environmental Defence’s policy leads to bring our arguments to Ottawa and advocate for environmental protection.

The Program Manager will be responsible for staying informed of developments inside government, co-creating, updating and overseeing progress on a work plan, contributing to content development, contributing to policy briefs and assisting with fundraising proposal development.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Monitor, analyse and keep EDC staff up to date on key developments in Ottawa, including Legislative Committee hearings
  • Identify and map out key contacts in Ottawa: elected representatives, their staff, senators, and officials inside key ministries
  • Lead the development of a government relations strategy for EDC
  • Act as a resource to EDC program managers and staff in developing and executing government relations programs
  • Track and report all meetings in accordance with applicable laws and regulations
  • Contribute to preparing briefing notes and other materials as necessary
  • Work with key allies in Ottawa and act as EDC’s contact lead on matters related to the federal government
  • Assist with writing grant applications and funder reports.

Skills and Experience

  • 5+ years experience working on environmental issues or public policy with government or an NGO
  • Deep understanding of environmental issues and in particular climate change impacts and policy solutions as well as demonstrated experience working on issues-based campaigns.
  • Knowledge of electricity systems and clean energy is a plus.
  • Project management experience an asset
  • Experience with government relations, media and/or politics
  • Thrives in a team environment, and can build strong working relationships
  • Efficient time and workload management skills

Location

This role will be a hybrid role, part time in the EDC Ottawa office and part time work from home.
