About Positive Change Toronto Initiative

Positive Change Toronto Initiative (PCTOI), a Toronto-based not-for-profit organization, we are currently seeking a passionate and experienced individual to join our team as a full-time Program Coordinator.

The PCTOI works to end youth violence by educating, advocating, and researching to address systemic discrimination and other barriers in the education criminal legal system, including policing, employment, family, neighbourhood, and mental health systems.

Job Summary:

The Program Coordinator will lead the planning and implementation of various programs related to advocacy initiatives, community support programs and the sustainable development of PCTOI.

Title: Program Coordinator

Reports to: Executive Director

Work Location: Primarily a remote working arrangement with a requirement to attend various sites in the City of Toronto during work hours as part of community engagement and advocacy initiatives, working evenings and weekends when needed.

Start Date: January 2026

Compensation: Maximum of $30 per hour, commensurate with experience and skills.

Duration: One year, with the possibility of extension.

Hours: Full time 35 hours per week

Key Responsibilities:

As a Program Coordinator, you are required to perform the following duties and professionally undertake the following responsibilities:

  • Establishing and maintaining relationships with other agencies and organizations in the community to meet community needs and to ensure that services and advocacy initiatives are not duplicated.
  • Building and enhancing relationships with community members and organizational partners through effective communication strategies.
  • Conducting continuous outreach to members of the Somali community, including youth, to build awareness of organizational initiatives and increase community engagement in the work of the organization.
  • Preparing concept notes, letters, organizational position papers, annual reports, and other communications as required.
  • Preparing grant proposals by developing new concepts that align with organizational priorities, writing drafts, and obtaining approvals from the Executive Director.
  • Identifying funding opportunities by gathering sources of information, establishing a working relationship with funders, coordinating funding submissions and communicating risks associated with any new proposals.
  • Providing strategic advice to the Executive Director on various matters, including the efficacy of organizational programs, strategic direction and advocacy initiatives.
  • Leading the development and implementation of performance measurement strategies that improve and enhance organizational programs and services.
  • Represents the organization at various community events, governmental committees/taskforces, and advocacy network meetings to ensure that the organization’s interests are presented and reported on.
  • Supporting the meetings of the Board of Directors by ensuring the preparation of materials, coordinating meetings and performing all other logistical matters associated with meetings, including the documentation of records of decisions; and taking the meeting minutes.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Education:

Candidate must have a post-secondary degree in social work, sociology, humanities, criminology, communication, or other relevant areas of study, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Experience:

  • Demonstrated experience of at least years in leading, planning and implementing community programs that support Black communities, particularly the Somali community, and advance equity and justice.
  • Demonstrated experience in writing grant proposals and policy briefs and can develop project charters and manage program budgets.
  • Demonstrated experience in project management, capacity-building initiatives and development of community-based projects.

Knowledge:

  • An understanding of the socio-economic and / or access to justice challenges facing Ontario’s Somali community, including anti-Black racism and Islamophobia.
  • A strong understanding of, and commitment to, anti-oppression principles and an awareness of the various intersections of social identities.
  • Strong communication/media and social media skills.
  • Knowledge of best practices for the management of not-for-profit organizations.

Board Support:

  • Participate in and support monthly board meetings, including scheduling, preparing a draft of agendas and minutes, creating presentations, distributing material, and maintaining files and reports as necessary.
  • Prepare and present reports to the Board of Directors and stakeholders as required.
  • Ensure the organization maintains a strong, positive image to relevant stakeholders and the public.

Skills:

  • Proven ability to work effectively both independently and in a team-based environment.
  • Excellent written, verbal and editing skills, with a proven ability to communicate effectively across multiple formats, including digital and in person with diverse audiences, community members, and policymakers.
  • Sound judgement and advanced political understanding with an ability to work independently on confidential and sensitive matters.
  • Intuitive and creative thinking skills with a solid commitment to solving complex problems through collaboration, engagement and consensus building.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage multiple deadlines in a fastpaced environment.
  • Demonstrated willingness to be flexible and adaptable to changing priorities.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, research, written and analytical skills.
  • A clear and systematic approach to work and strong organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Visio; and
  • Proficiency in the Somali language is an asset.
