M Film Lab is a nonprofit initiative dedicated to elevating underrepresented voices in film by supporting bold, authentic, and socially relevant storytelling. Through writing labs, mentorship programs, and community engagement, M Film Lab nurtures emerging writers and helps bring powerful minority narratives to life.
We operate primarily online to maximize geographic reach, reduce operational costs, and create inclusive access for creatives across regions.
Position Overview
M Film Lab is seeking a highly organized, proactive, and mission-driven Program & Communications Manager to oversee day-to-day operations of our writing labs and contests, manage communications and social media, and support fundraising and donor engagement efforts.
This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a startup-style nonprofit environment and is comfortable balancing strategy with hands-on execution.
This is a fully remote position, and candidates must be legally authorized to work in Canada.
Key Responsibilities
Program & Contest Administration
- Manage logistics for multiple writing labs and contests per year
- Oversee submission tracking, participant communication, and scheduling
- Coordinate with mentors, judges, and board members
- Maintain an annual calendar of M Lab activities
Communications & Social Media
- Develop and execute a strategic social media plan (Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, etc.)
- Create, schedule, and optimize content to increase engagement and visibility
- Draft press releases, website updates, and public announcements
- Design and circulate recurring email newsletters
- Manage and grow the M Lab mailing list
Fundraising & Donor Relations
- Support philanthropic outreach and fundraising initiatives
- Maintain and update a donor database (individuals, foundations, sponsors)
- Track donor communications and stewardship activities
- Assist in organizing fundraising campaigns and virtual events
- Identify and research potential partner organizations and collaborators
Community Engagement
- Maintain communication with alumni writers, mentors, and ambassadors
- Foster collaboration within the M Lab creative community
- Develop initiatives to retain graduates as ambassadors and fundraising advocates
Website & Content Management
- Post updates and announcements on the M Film Lab website
- Assist in shaping messaging and storytelling around the Lab’s mission
- Maintain brand consistency across digital platforms
- Design basic promotional materials (Canva or similar tools preferred)
Ideal Candidate Profile
- Based in Canada
- 2–5+ years experience in nonprofit communications, arts administration, or social media marketing
- Demonstrated experience managing social media accounts for a nonprofit or mission-driven organization
- Strong written communication skills (press releases, newsletters, fundraising language)
- Highly organized and comfortable managing multiple moving parts
- Familiarity with CRM systems, mailing list tools (Mailchimp or similar), and website CMS platforms
- Graphic design proficiency (Canva or similar tools preferred)
- Passion for storytelling, film, and elevating underrepresented voices
