ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW

Durham Rape Crisis Centre (DRCC) is a non-profit feminist organization. We work with survivors, and the wider Durham community to produce comprehensive violence prevention and response work, including: crisis support services, counselling (individual and group), advocacy, accompaniment, and support services for survivors of sexual violence. Our organization recognizes and believes in the equality of all regardless of race, class, sexual orientation, or gender.

We are seeking a highly skilled School Public Educator and Counsellor to join us in our commitment to contributing to the organizational success of DRCC. This position will focus on providing public education and counselling to mainly Post-Secondary schools in Scarborough and in the Durham Region. ROLE OVERVIEW

As a Sexual Assault Centre, we provide free, confidential, trauma-informed services to individuals who have experienced recent, historical, or childhood sexual assault, sexual abuse, and sexual harassment, as well as support for their families and loved ones. Reporting to the Manager of Counselling, the Post-Secondary Public Educator & Counsellor is responsible for delivering a combination of public education, outreach, and clinical counselling services within post-secondary institutions across Durham Region. This dual-role position develops and delivers prevention-focused education that promotes healthy relationships, consent, and sexual violence prevention while also providing trauma-informed counselling to post-secondary students who have experienced sexual violence. This role is guided by the agency's vision, mission, and values, rooted in our commitment to ending all forms of gender-based violence against women, femmes, trans, non-binary, and gender-diverse people, as well as children. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to equity, inclusion, anti-oppressive practice, and intersectional feminist principles in all aspects of their work

The Educator and Counsellor is expected to balance their time as follows:

25% Counselling at a Post-Secondary School within the Durham Region

50% Public Education and Awareness at Post-Secondary School(s) and other institutions

25% Administration and Notetaking

Duties include:

Public Education and Awareness:

  • Develop, coordinate, and deliver engaging presentations, workshops, webinars, and educational initiatives focused on sexual violence prevention, consent, healthy relationships, bystander intervention, and available supports. Oversee the implementation of public education presentation and workshops with the post-secondary schools and institutions.
  • Collaborate with internal staff to create and update educational resources and training materials related to prevention, intervention, and responding to disclosures of sexual violence.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with post-secondary institutions, student services, campus partners, and community stakeholders to expand education and outreach opportunities.
  • Promote DRCC services through campus outreach activities, including information booths, orientation events, awareness campaigns, resource distribution, and ongoing communication with campus departments.
  • Increase awareness of available campus and community supports by developing resource materials and strengthening referral pathways.
  • Facilitate timely referrals and coordinated access to services while supporting continuity of care for students requiring ongoing support.
  • Network with public educators and community partners across the Violence Against Women (VAW) sector to collaborate on regional and provincial awareness initiatives.
  • Collect and evaluate participant feedback to assess the effectiveness of education initiatives and support continuous program improvement.
  • Represent the agency professionally at community events, public education panels, conferences, committees, and media opportunities, as required.
  • Participate in the planning and implementation of public awareness campaigns and community education events.
  • Maintain accurate program records, resource materials, and statistical data.

Counselling:

  • Offering trauma-informed, intersectional-feminist and client-centered individual and/or group counselling to survivors of sexual violence aged 16 and above in the Durham Region and surrounding areas. This involves providing counselling and/or psychotherapy, conducting client assessments and supporting clients in achieving those goals through tailored individualized counselling plans. Counselling and/or psychotherapy must be trauma-informed, intersectional-feminist, client-centered, collaborative, consent- based and strengths-based in nature
  • Providing advocacy, accompaniment and support, including making referrals to when necessary
  • Managing program administration, communications, and client case files, ensuring compliance with DRCC policies and relevant regulatory bodies such as CRPO and OCSWSSW, if applicable
  • Conducting ongoing assessments (i.e. pre-assessment, intake, etc.), to determine suitability for individual and/or group counselling.
  • Overseeing the intake process, referrals, waitlist, caseload assignments for individual and group programs.

Other:

  • Participating in staff meetings, training sessions, peer support, and clinical supervision (individual and group) as required
  • Participating in public education, workshops, training sessions, community outreach and/or consultation with community agencies, as required
  • Staying informed about the latest research and developments in trauma-informed counselling practices, approached, interventions and treatments
  • Supervising placement students to complete their placement requirements as defined by their educational institution. This may include providing advice to students to help them reach their professional and personal development goals.
  • Collaborate with staff, students, volunteers, and community partners to support agency initiatives.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Salary Range: $45-55K

QUALIFICATIONS and SKILL SETS

We are looking for:

  • 5+ years charity/nonprofit experience, ideally working in the gender-based violence prevention and response community and/or front-line crisis response
  • Experience in the government-funded not-for-profit sector
  • Attention to detail and high level of accuracy.
  • Committed to advancing social justice
  • Sound judgment, problem-solving and organizational skills Time Management.
  • Passionate individual who is a strong leader with creative ideas and drive to grow the agency
  • Strong people skills, accompanied by the skills to lead and support our diverse and talented team.

EMPLOYMENT and WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Full time contract leadership position (1 year) with the opportunity for extension.
  • Hours are Monday to Friday based on agency need with additional hours as required, including evenings/and weekends.
  • Will work onsite at post-secondary schools (Scarborough and Durham Region) and other institutions as well as virtual.
  • Interacts with staff, client, agency, community, and government stakeholders within a variety of circumstances, some of which may be crisis or stressful situations.
  • Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening required.
