About Us
The Liver Awareness Foundation (LAF) is an emerging nonprofit dedicated to transforming the conversation around liver health. Our focus is on lifestyle-related liver conditions, with particular attention to alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD).

Our Mission
To empower young adults with liver health knowledge to break stigmas and combat the silent threats of liver disease.

What We Do
Through education, research, outreach, and community engagement, we aim to:

  • Advocate for early detection and proactive care
  • Reduce stigma surrounding liver disease
  • Support individuals and families impacted by ALD
  • Equip young people with knowledge to protect their health and future

As we build our foundation, we are bringing together a team of passionate leaders who share our vision. We are currently seeking a Volunteer Director of Finance / Treasurer to help shape the financial stewardship and long-term sustainability of this movement.

Position Summary:
We are looking for a Director of Finance/Treasurer to join our Board of Directors. As a key volunteer leader, you will oversee LAF's financial strategy, ensure compliance with nonprofit financial regulations, and guide the organization’s fiscal health. This position requires a seasoned financial professional who can provide transparency and accountability, ensuring that the organization’s financial resources are managed effectively to support our mission of liver health awareness and education.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as an active, engaged member of the Board of Directors with a two-year term commitment.
  • Oversee all financial operations of LAF, ensuring compliance with Canadian charity financial regulations and nonprofit best practices.
  • Develop, manage, and monitor the organization’s annual budget, ensuring that funds are allocated in alignment with LAF’s strategic goals and mission.
  • Provide the Board with regular financial reports, including income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow projections.
  • Manage LAF’s financial accounts, including overseeing bookkeeping, audits, and tax filings.
  • Advise the Board on financial strategies, risk management, and long-term financial sustainability to support LAF’s growth.
  • Work closely with the fundraising team to ensure financial stewardship of donations, grants, and sponsorships.
  • Implement and monitor financial policies and controls, ensuring proper safeguarding of assets and compliance with best financial practices.
  • Collaborate with external auditors and accountants to ensure timely annual audits and financial reviews. (Note this is a start-up)

Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience in financial management, accounting, or a similar role. A CPA or equivalent designation is highly preferred.
  • Experience in nonprofit or charity financial management is strongly preferred.
  • Strong expertise in budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, and fundraising management.
  • Ability to translate complex financial data into clear, actionable insights for non-financial board members and stakeholders.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • A strong commitment to LAF’s mission of raising awareness around liver health and alcohol-associated liver disease.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other Board members and staff, fostering a cooperative and positive environment for decision-making.

Volunteer Expectations:

As a volunteer with LAF, you are expected to:

  • Be fully engaged in organizational activities, staying up-to-date on LAF developments and preparing for meetings by reviewing reports and financial statements.
  • Build strong, collaborative relationships with fellow Board members, ensuring effective decision-making and contributing to strategic planning efforts.
  • Participate in LAF’s annual evaluation and long-term strategic planning.
  • Actively contribute to LAF’s fundraising efforts, helping secure the financial resources necessary to further the organization’s mission.
  • Bring diverse perspectives and innovative ideas to discussions, particularly around financial sustainability and risk management.
