MFOA Policy Intern

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Municipal Finance Officers’ Association (MFOA) is a non-profit, member-based association providing policy and training services to municipal finance officers across Ontario. MFOA is seeking to fill two (2) Policy Intern positions. These roles offer an opportunity to build strong research, analytical, and advocacy skills while contributing to meaningful policy work that supports Ontario municipalities.

Working closely with the Manager of Policy, Policy Team Lead, and Policy Advisor, the interns will support a range of policy research, policy development, and advocacy initiatives. Each intern will work on structured research projects guided by established workplans, focusing on specialized topics in municipal finance. Responsibilities will include conducting research, synthesizing findings, preparing written materials, supporting the development of member resources, and delivering presentations on research outcomes. The role will also include working with senior leadership in municipal governments and providing frequent updates to the Project Oversight Committee. Each intern will also develop a research paper based on their assigned workplan, incorporating literature review, analysis, and written synthesis of findings.

Preference will be given to recent master’s graduates or current graduate-level students in Ontario in local government administration, political science, commerce, social sciences, or a related discipline.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge of municipal governance
  • Strong research, synthesis, and academic writing skills (including the ability to draft research papers)
  • Superior listening, organization, follow-up, editing, and analytical skills
  • Knowledge of policy development and advocacy
  • Interest in municipal governance and/or finance

This internship is a temporary position of up to 16 weeks and the start date will be in March 2026. Salary is based on $25 per hour and a 36.25-hour week. Vacation pay of 4% will be added to bi-weekly pay and an option to participate in the OMERS pension plan will be offered.
