Unpaid Volunteer Position
1 - 2 years of experience

Are you over the age of 18? Would you like to help a child/youth reach their full academic potential or motivate them to achieve more? Volunteers are required to tutor children/youth in all subjects, especially math, English, science and French.

The volunteer will assist a child/youth to experience success in learning through a supportive one-to-one relationship. The child/youth requiring assistance can range in age from 6 to 18 and all academic levels. Scheduling can be arranged directly with the caregiver at your mutual convenience.

Role
• To assist a child/youth to experience success in learning through a supportive one-to-one relationship.
• To provide the child/youth with basic learning tools and skills.

Time Commitment
• One or two hours weekly. Times are flexible and will be arranged to accommodate all participants.

Major Responsibilities
• Act as a sensitive, caring learning guide, enabling the child/youth to discover their own strengths as a student.
• Model healthy study skills and positive approaches to schoolwork.
• Tutoring can be held at the agency, library or foster home, as mutually agreeable.
• Advise the worker and Supervisor of Volunteer Services of any concerns or problems that may arise during tutoring sessions.
• Adhere to the guidelines of Halton CAS Code of Conduct.

Requirements/Qualifications

• General knowledge of material to be learned.
• An interest in and ability to relate well to children, youth and families.
• Complete a Vulnerable Sector Screening.
• Be fully vaccinated and provide receipt.
• Patience, flexibility and non-judgmental attitude.
• Experience in teaching is an asset.
