About the Role

The PT Custodian is responsible for the efficient and effective custodial maintenance of the properties and grounds of Sojourn House. The shelter provides emergency accommodation to refugees in an environment guided by anti-oppression, anti-racist, access, and equity principles, which inform all aspects of our work. This is a part-time permanent position with a total of 16 hours per week. Shifts are 4 hours each day, from 8:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. Monday to Thursday

What you'll Do

Cleaning /Sanitation

  • Clean and maintain all common areas, including hallways, stairwells, offices, washrooms, laundry rooms, and activity spaces (sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting)
  • Clean glass surfaces, blinds, ledges, elevator areas, and remove cobwebs from walls, ceilings, and fixtures
  • Maintain floors, including polishing, waxing, and removing marks as required
  • Clean and sanitize washrooms, garbage bins, and high-touch surfaces regularly
  • Empty waste bins, manage garbage and recycling, and ensure proper disposal procedures
  • Clean vacant units, including appliances, as directed
  • Maintain exterior areas by removing debris, snow, and applying salt as needed
  • Report any damage, safety concerns, or vandalism promptly to the Supervisor
  • Support student placements or volunteers during job shadowing, as required

Health and Safety

  • Operate cleaning equipment safely and maintain tools in good working condition
  • Follow WHMIS guidelines and ensure safe handling, storage, and use of cleaning chemicals
  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow all safety procedure

General Duties

  • Maintain inventory of cleaning supplies and notify Supervisor when replenishment is needed
  • Keep custodial storage areas clean and organized
  • Respond to custodial concerns and communicate issues to the Facility Manager
  • Collaborate with team members to support work plans, schedules, and service quality
  • Maintain positive, respectful interactions with residents, staff, and visitors within an anti-racism, access, and equity framework
  • Participate in team meetings and contribute to continuous improvement of services
  • Comply with all agency policies, procedures, and Code of Conduct
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

What You'll need

  • Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in custodial services in a non-profit or community-based setting
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Relevant training or certification in janitorial or custodial services is an asset
  • Valid WHMIS certification (or willingness to obtain)
  • Standard First Aid & CPR Certificate
  • Demonstrated skill in the use of commercial cleaning equipment
  • Knowledge of anti-racism, access and equity principles and its application to providing services in a not-for-profit setting
  • Demonstrates ethical behavior consistent with organizational values and standards
  • Builds and maintains positive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Communicates clearly, respectfully, and in a timely manner, both in person and in writing, using appropriate tools within an inclusive, equity-informed approach
  • Identifies practical ways to improve cleaning efficiency and maintenance processes
  • Anticipates and responds to the needs of residents and staff to maintain a clean, safe, and comfortable environment
  • Works cooperatively with others to set goals, resolve problems, and support effective operations
  • Positively contributes to team outcomes and supports organizational goals
  • Assesses situations to determine urgency and risk, and makes timely, sound decisions
  • Organizes work effectively by setting priorities, managing time, and tracking tasks and activities
  • Identifies issues, determines causes, and resolves cleaning and maintenance concerns effectively
  • Knowledge of health and safety standards, including the safe use of cleaning chemicals, equipment, and PPE
  • Strong attention to detail to maintain high standards of cleanliness and sanitation
  • Reliable and able to work independently with minimal supervision

Working Conditions

  • This position requires the physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs., including the movement of furniture, garbage bins, and maintenance equipment. Duties are performed throughout the building and exterior property and involve the use of commercial cleaning products and equipment.

Hours: 16 hours per week (4 hours per day , Monday to Thursday)
