POSITION SUMMARY:

The Social Planning Council of Ottawa is seeking a detail-oriented and experienced CPA-designated Accountant & Bookkeeper to provide ongoing financial management, bookkeeping, and compliance support for our multi-program nonprofit organization.

The successful candidate will ensure accurate financial reporting, maintain strong internal controls, and support grant reporting requirements across multiple funders.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Financial Accounting & Reporting

Maintain accurate financial records in accordance with CPA standards, ASPE, and nonprofit accounting requirements.

Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.

Support year-end audit preparation, working closely with external auditors.

Track restricted and unrestricted revenues across multiple programs.

Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards, and petty cash.

2. Bookkeeping & General Ledger Management

Manage day-to-day bookkeeping, including journal entries, bank reconciliations, payroll accruals, and adjusting entries.

Maintain the chart of accounts and ensure accurate coding of expenses.

Monitor accounts payable and accounts receivable.

Ensure timely processing of invoices, reimbursements, and vendor payments.

3. Grant & Fund Management

Track spending for multiple funding streams (City of Ottawa, United Way, federal and provincial grants, private foundations).

Prepare financial reports for funders, including budget-to-actual statements.

Support compliance with funder financial requirements and reporting deadlines.

4. Payroll & CRA Compliance

Oversee payroll calculations and liaise with payroll service providers.

Ensure compliance with CRA regulations (CPP, EI, EHT, T4/T4A, HST filings).

Maintain employee financial records and support onboarding/offboarding financial documentation.

5. Financial Systems & Controls

Maintain strong internal controls and financial procedures.

Recommend improvements to financial policies and accounting processes.

Support the Executive Director with forecasting, budgeting, and financial risk management.
