Role Purpose The Operations Lead - People and Community will provide critical operational support to enable smooth and sustainable organizational functioning during a period of growth. Our strategic leadership team requires additional capacity to manage the volunteer lifecycle, communications infrastructure, and day-to-day operational coordination. This role is essential for relieving operational burden on leadership while ensuring effective volunteer engagement, clear internal communications, and professional external presence. You will create the systems and processes that keep our volunteer community connected, informed, and productive. Key Responsibilities
Core Operational Leadership:
• Volunteer Lifecycle Management: Coordinate volunteer communications and manage
the complete volunteer lifecycle in collaboration with the Volunteer Management (VM) team and Project Leads (PLs)
• Internal Communications: Manage internal communications across Slack and email channels, ensuring timely information flow and team coordination
• Meeting Coordination: Organize and facilitate major organization-wide meetings, ensuring effective participation and follow-through
• External Communications: Develop and distribute newsletters providing updates on Sprout and CRC initiatives to partners, subscribers, and the broader community
• Stakeholder Response: Monitor and respond to inquiries from external-facing general mailboxes (excluding volunteer and partnership-specific inquiries)
• Organizational Systems: Maintain organizational chart and volunteer activity tracker to ensure accurate records and visibility
Additional responsibilities include:
• Develop and refine volunteer communication templates and protocols
• Identify opportunities to streamline operational processes and reduce administrative
burden
• Support onboarding and offboarding processes for volunteers
• Coordinate cross-functional initiatives requiring organization-wide participation
• Track and report on operational metrics related to volunteer engagement and
communications effectiveness
• Serve as a liaison between operational needs and strategic priorities
• Contribute to building a culture of sustainable volunteering and preventing burnout
across the organization Required Qualifications
• Demonstrated experience in people management and team coordination
• Proven track record managing both internal and external communications in a
professional context
• Experience running operations in a nonprofit, community organization, or
volunteer-based environment
• Strong organizational and project management skills with ability to manage multiple
priorities
• Excellent written and verbal communication abilities
• Proficiency with digital collaboration tools (Slack, email platforms, spreadsheets,
project management tools)
• Self-directed work style with ability to identify needs and take initiative
• Commitment to supporting volunteer wellbeing and sustainable engagement
practices Nice-to-Have Qualifications
• Leadership experience in volunteer-based, nonprofit, or community organizations
• Experience with volunteer management systems or databases
• Familiarity with newsletter platforms and external communications tools
• Background in change management or organizational development
• Experience with asynchronous communication and distributed team coordination
• Knowledge of best practices in volunteer recruitment, retention, and recognition
• Understanding of climate, environmental, or social impact sectors
• Experience with creating tracking/reporting systems

• External Presence: Regular, professional newsletters and external communications
that strengthen CRC's partnerships and community presence
• Organizational Systems: Accurate, up-to-date organizational chart and volunteer
tracking systems
• Meeting Effectiveness: Well-organized organization-wide meetings with clear
agendas, documentation, and follow-up
• Stakeholder Responsiveness: Timely responses to external inquiries demonstrating
professionalism and organizational competence
• Process Improvements: Documented operational processes and templates that
