OPEN ABLS INDUSTRIAL DESIGNER — VOLUNTEER, PART-TIME

Organization: Right to Live Canada

Location: Remote (United States, Canada or Europe)

Time Commitment: Part-time volunteer commitment, minimum 20 hours per week, including meetings and all role work. Duration negotiable, four month minimum.

This is a remote volunteer opportunity with Right to Live Canada, a virtual-office based Canadian non-profit start-up.

------ THE MISSION

Right to Live Canada exists to realize the right to live as a practical, supported, executable choice.

We were founded in response to systemic poverty-driven euthanasia amongst Canadians with disabilities: cases where Canadians choose MAiD because they cannot access the essentials required to continue living. This is a specific form of economic euthanasia: euthanasia where a preferable living future existed, but was not achieved.

That crisis remains our founding application point. It is not the boundary of our work.

Right to Live Canada is building Continuity: the service, financial, technological, and institutional architecture required to keep life connected to preferable living futures. We work from the recognition that biological escape velocity may become achievable for a significant portion of people alive today, and that the right to live must now be pursued with the seriousness, urgency, and scale appropriate to that possibility.

Our four core areas are:

  • Continuity Service — developing a service to identify, propose, finance and execute preferable living futures in the event of potential death
  • Continuity Insurance — developing a finance model for Continuity Service in the event of potential death scenarios
  • Social Brokerage — developing a system to productize and sell the anonymized outcome of a life supported to the global market as an impact product in exchange for the capital to accomplish it, in order to fund those who cannot afford Continuity Service or Insurance
  • Corporate Farming — developing a global-scale system to take concepts, form a structure around them starting with a team, incubate them internally and nurture their growth towards incorporation, and then emitting them as formed non-profits dedicated to their founding concept such as a technology, project, infrastructure or issue.

Right to Live Canada is a founder-centric, early-stage non-profit pursuing rapid national and global expansion. We use the advantages of the non-profit form — volunteer-class labor, sponsorship sales, grants, subsidized infrastructure, open development, impact monetization, and institutional farming — to uphold and extend the right to live for humans and, ultimately, other conscious beings.

------ ROLE DESCRIPTION

This is a part-time, volunteer, and remote role for an OpenABLS Industrial Designer with Right to Live Canada.

The OpenABLS Industrial Designer will create precise, visually strong, and reusable 3D CAD models for the project’s development stages: the open workbench, the Integrated Development Prototype, and the eventual reference product. The role will also develop related concepts, including the ABLS Idol Bot as a representative humanoid embodiment option and possible future platform.

The first phase will focus on exterior form, proportions, scale, and configuration without inventing unsupported internal detail. As component selection and system design mature, the designer will progressively develop accurate internal layouts, component models, assemblies, connection views, cutaways, exploded views, technical drawings, and presentation-ready renders using dimensions and decisions supplied or approved by the engineering team.

Responsibilities include building and maintaining parametric parts and assemblies in Autodesk Fusion; translating dimensions, sketches, reference material, and engineering decisions into accurate models; maintaining clean, reusable, and versioned source files; producing technical and presentation views; incorporating engineering feedback; and coordinating model files with the Technical Documentation & GitHub Manager. The designer must not invent component functions, connections, dimensions, or claims when the engineering basis has not been established.

This is a high-ownership role suited to someone who can combine strong industrial design with engineering discipline and technical restraint. OpenABLS is an early-stage, open-source, non-clinical research and engineering project, so concept models must be clearly distinguishable from validated engineering designs and clinical-ready products. The minimum commitment is 20 hours per week, including meetings and all role work.

The role will work closely with the Head of Product Development, biomedical and engineering contributors, project management, the Technical Documentation & GitHub Manager, web design volunteers, and the Communications & Content Manager. The CAD system should evolve with the product while remaining coherent, reusable, and accurate across every public and technical application.

------ QUALIFICATIONS

Universal Requirement:

  • You must possess good equipment for virtual meetings, both video and audio.
  • You must attend virtual meetings with the capability to give it your full attention, like a dedicated office room or space.

Required:

  • A strong portfolio demonstrating professional industrial design, 3D CAD product development, or complex hardware design.
  • Advanced proficiency in Autodesk Fusion or a comparable professional parametric CAD platform, including clean modeling workflows and organized production files.
  • Strong industrial-design capability in form development, proportion, materials, finishes, and manufacturability awareness.
  • Ability to translate dimensions, sketches, reference images, diagrams, and engineering feedback into accurate 3D models.
  • Experience creating parametric parts, assemblies, component layouts, cutaways, exploded views, or other technically informative product models.
  • Ability to maintain reusable model libraries, disciplined file organization, and clear revision history.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to receive, clarify, and implement detailed technical feedback.
  • Comfort working remotely with a high degree of ownership, consistency, and follow-through.
  • Judgment to distinguish visual concept development from engineering validation and to avoid unsupported technical invention.

Preferred:

  • Experience visualizing biomedical, medical-device, laboratory, life-support, robotics, or other complex hardware.
  • Experience with Blender, KeyShot, or comparable tools for high-quality materials, lighting, photorealistic rendering, and presentation assets.
  • Mechanical-design or product-development experience, including component packaging, interfaces, materials, manufacturability, or product architecture.
  • Experience producing 3D animation, motion studies, turntables, or explanatory technical sequences.
  • Experience preparing models and renders for websites, presentations, videos, media, sponsorship materials, and open-source documentation.

------ TIME COMMITMENT

This is a part-time volunteer role requiring a minimum commitment of 20 hours per week, including all meetings and role work. Right to Live Canada is an early-stage, founder-led organization pursuing rapid national and global expansion. The role is best suited to someone who is comfortable with startup intensity, high responsibility, and a culture of serious dedication to the mission.
