Job Description

Reporting to the Resource Development and Program Manager, the Newcomers Settlement and Case Worker will be responsible for aiding and supporting newcomer/immigrant/refugee individuals and families who are new to the area, assisting with information, orientation and referrals. The Worker will also work alongside other staff and volunteers while overseeing current recreational programming.

Key Qualifications

  • Post-secondary graduate in community-oriented fields such as Social Work, Recreation Studies, Education, or similar.
  • 1-2 years of working experience in community development or settlement services including one on one assessment or casework.
  • 1-2 years of experience working alongside and supervising volunteers.
  • Strong knowledge of policies, needs, issues, and resources related to newcomer or immigrant populations.
  • Cultural sensitivity and ability to communicate respectfully with clients from diverse ethnic and economic backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated ability to program plan, facilitate/implement and evaluate activities, programs and groups.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel), Google workspaces and client management software.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple cases simultaneously.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion and tact.
  • A second language would be considered an extremely strong asset.
  • CPR/First Aid training in good standing would be considered an asset.

Major Responsibilities

  • Plan, coordinate, and deliver recreational, social, and cultural programs for newcomers of all ages.
  • Lead group activities that promote social connection, community engagement, and cultural integration.
  • Facilitate workshops, drop-in programs, and special events (e.g., celebrations, outings, community gatherings).
  • Conduct assessments to determine client needs and eligibility for services.
  • Provide information and referrals of community resources, including housing, healthcare, education, legal services, and employment.
  • Assist clients with navigating government services and completing necessary documentation/forms.
  • Advocate on behalf of clients in situations where they face challenges accessing services or support.
  • Provide interpretation services as required.
  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date records, including statistical data, attendances and reports while using relevant data management systems.
  • Plan and oversee regular recreational programming for community members such as, but not limited to, cooking classes, women’s social groups, language instruction, etc.
  • Participates in regular staff and other meetings.

  • Consideration will be given to internal candidates currently employed with Eastview Neighbourhood Community Centre as outlined in the Collective Agreement Article 18.01 (b).
  • This position requires successful completion of a vulnerable sector check.
