Toronto Military Family Resource Centre, MFRC, is a community-based, charitable organization focused on the delivery of services, resources and supports to the military and Veteran family community throughout the Greater Toronto Area. We are located in the area of Downsview Park in North York, and are easily accessible by public transit with free parking on site.

Role Description

The Mental Health Worker delivers single-session interventions and short term counselling support to families of Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) personnel and Veterans. They provide family case management, resource coordination and advocacy for families requiring specialized services within the community. They support families in person or remotely through virtual means, in one-on-one, couple, family or group settings. This is a full-time, permanent, bargaining unit position.

Primary Responsibilities

The Mental Health Worker will:

  • Provide family centred single-session interventions and/or short term counselling (1 – 3 sessions) to individuals (children, youth, adults), couples, families and groups, addressing issues associated with the military family lifestyle and family challenges, in line with the Military Family Services (MFS) Mental Health Services Framework and strategic direction; this could include, but is not limited to, relationship issues, parenting, family violence, substance use, suicidal ideation, transitions, mental health and wellness promotion;
  • Provide psychosocial support, case management, coordinate and provide referral and advocacy for clients requiring specialized and professional services within both military/Veteran and civilian communities;
  • Support/counsel families in crisis or imminent crisis;
  • Support families in person or virtually in one on one, couple, family or group environments, as required;
  • Identify, assess and address gaps in the provision of family services;
  • Co-facilitate preventative mental health and lifestyle management programs, psychoeducation workshops and services to assist CAF and Veteran families experiencing military lifestyle challenges and transitions;
  • Provide information briefings to families, the CAF and Veteran community, other stakeholders and partner organizations pertinent to understanding and addressing family mental health;
  • Participate in monthly external group/individual clinical supervision sessions, on-site individual clinical supervision, and regular team meetings;
  • Serve as a member of the Family Violence Advisory Team (FVAT);
  • Document client information and activities within Customer Relationship Management system (i.e., Penelope);
  • Demonstrate a high level of diligence with respect to record keeping and protection of sensitive, confidential information;
  • Participate in program/service development, data collection, evaluation and continuous quality improvement activities;
  • Demonstrate a commitment to continuous professional development and maintain good standing with professional regulatory body (CRPO);
  • Maintain professional liability insurance;
  • Work collaboratively with team members and all levels of leadership;
  • Participate in budget and resource development for relevant service areas.

Required Qualifications

The ideal candidate will, at minimum, possess/demonstrate the following:

  • University degree in mental health field;
  • Current registration in good standing, with professional association/regulatory body (i.e. College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario);
  • Maintain professional liability insurance
  • 2 years of related clinical experience serving families from strengths and resiliency based and trauma informed perspectives;
  • Clear Police Check/Vulnerable Sector Search and Enhanced Reliability Security Clearance (facilitated by employer);
  • Verbal and written proficiency in English language.

Required Knowledge

The ideal candidate will possess/demonstrate knowledge of:

  • Clinical assessment and therapeutic intervention techniques;
  • Crisis assessment and crisis intervention techniques;
  • Risk assessment;
  • Determinants of health and well-being;
  • Single-session interventions and short-term (1 – 3 session) counselling methods;
  • Virtual and tele-counselling principles;
  • Family case management;
  • Group dynamics and facilitation of group counselling;
  • Adult learning principles;
  • Community development;
  • Knowledge of civilian community based agencies and organizations offering relevant support services;
  • Health records management; knowledge and practical application of legislation governing the collection, use and disclosure of personal health information;
  • Program development, performance management and program evaluation.

Required Experience

The ideal candidate will possess/demonstrate experience in:

  • Psychosocial counselling using evidence-based treatment approaches;
  • Crisis intervention and risk management;
  • Client assessment and case management;
  • Experience serving diverse populations;
  • Clinical record keeping;
  • Performance measurement and analysis;
  • Collaboration with a multi-disciplinary team;
  • Community networking.

The following skillsets will be considered an asset:

  • Certification in CPR & First Aid, Mental Health First Aid, Suicide Intervention, Crisis Intervention
  • Knowledge of the national Military and Veteran Family Services Program;
  • Understanding of the unique military lifestyle challenges facing CAF and Veteran families;
  • Understanding of CAF and Veteran communities, systems, policies and practices in order to effectively assist families in accessing appropriate services and supports;
  • Verbal and written proficiency in French language.

Work Environment

  • This is a full-time (37.5hrs/wk), permanent position, based on successful completion of a probationary period.
  • Typical hours are 8:00am to 4:00pm, however hours are flexible, based on the needs of the organization and families being served, and may require occasional work on evenings/weekends.
  • Location of work: Toronto Military Family Resource Centre, located at 5 Yukon Lane, North York.
  • May require some local travel within the Greater Toronto Area, to support families in various settings such as private homes, hospitals, care facilities, or military establishments.
