Zajac Ranch is an inclusive and accessible camp located on 41 acres in Mission, British Columbia.

Our summer medical camps provide children, youth, and young adults living with complex medical conditions and disabilities the opportunity to experience friendship, adventure, independence, and the joy of camp.

Our onsite medical team helps make these experiences possible by providing safe, compassionate, and responsive health support throughout each camp session.

Position Overview

Medical Volunteers are an important part of the onsite medical team and support the health, safety, and well-being of campers, staff, and volunteers. Depending on professional qualifications and assigned responsibilities, duties may include camper check-in, medication support, first aid, health documentation, monitoring, and responding to medical concerns as they arise.

Specific duties are assigned by the Nursing Director or designated medical lead based on each volunteer's credentials, authorized scope of practice, training, competence, supervision requirements, the medical team configuration, and the needs of the assigned camp session.

Key Responsibilities

• Support the overall health, safety, and well-being of campers, staff, and volunteers.
• Review relevant camper medical information, care plans, allergies, medication instructions, and emergency protocols within the responsibilities assigned to the volunteer.
• Support camper check-in and medication intake, including identifying and escalating missing, unclear, or inconsistent information.
• Receive, organize, store, document, and administer medications where authorized and assigned, following camp procedures and applicable professional standards.
• Respond to first aid and health concerns, monitor campers who require observation, and support emergency response or transfer of care when necessary.
• Maintain clear, timely, accurate, and confidential medical documentation, including medication records, treatment notes, health logs, incident documentation, and shift handover information as applicable.
• Prepare and maintain medical supplies and equipment and report low, expired, damaged, or missing items.
• Work collaboratively with the Nursing Director, Camp Physician, nursing team, camp leadership, families, and other authorized members of the care team.
• Provide respectful, camper-centred care that protects safety, privacy, dignity, comfort, independence, confidentiality, and individual needs.
• Complete other reasonable medical support duties within the volunteer's qualifications, authorized scope of practice, training, and assigned responsibilities.
• Actively participate in quality improvement initiatives, including developing resources, identifying opportunities for improvement, and providing feedback on processes.
• Complete documentation using web-based platforms, including CampBrain and Monday.com, as well as Microsoft Office applications.

Scope of Practice & Supervision

Medical Volunteers must only perform duties that fall within their professional qualifications, authorized scope of practice, training, competence, and assigned responsibilities. Volunteers must escalate clinical concerns, medication discrepancies, changes in condition, safeguarding concerns, or situations outside their scope to the Nursing Director, Camp Physician, designated medical lead, or emergency services as appropriate.

Students, paramedics, and applicants whose professional role requires supervision may be considered based on their training and experience, the needs of the camp session, and the availability of an appropriate nurse, physician, or other authorized supervisor.

Qualifications & Requirements

• Qualified professional or student in medicine, nursing, paramedicine, or another approved healthcare field.
• Current practising registration, licence, certification, or student status in good standing with the applicable regulatory college, professional association, educational institution, or employer, where applicable.
• Valid CPR-C certification or a higher-level current certification.
• Satisfactory Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search.
• Ability to provide professional credentials, proof of enrolment, references, and liability insurance where required by the volunteer's professional designation.
• Completion of Zajac Ranch's application, screening, orientation, confidentiality requirements, and role-specific training.
• Ability to communicate respectfully and effectively with children, youth, young adults, families, staff, and healthcare professionals.
• Comfort working collaboratively in an active residential camp environment.
• Experience in pediatric care, emergency care, camp nursing, community nursing, disability support, mental health, or complex medical care is considered an asset.

Time Commitment & Working Environment

Medical Volunteers typically support one full residential camp session. Exact arrival, departure, shift, overnight, and on-call expectations will be confirmed before the volunteer accepts a placement.

• Remain onsite for the agreed coverage period and participate in medical team handovers and meetings as scheduled.
• Support daytime, evening, overnight, or on-call medical coverage where assigned.
• Respond to unplanned or urgent medical situations in a calm and professional manner.
• Work in the medical centre and, when required, provide support in cabins, dining areas, activity spaces, and outdoor areas across the Ranch.
• Work in a rural camp environment that may involve uneven terrain, water, animals, recreational activities, and periods of standing, walking, or carrying medical supplies.

What We Provide

• Orientation, role-specific procedures, access to relevant camper medical information, and ongoing support from the Nursing Director and medical team.
• Shared onsite accommodation in the Ranch's medical residence during the assigned camp session. Room arrangements may vary depending on medical staffing and operational needs.
• Meals and scheduled snacks during the assigned camp session.
• A collaborative opportunity to gain experience in camp, pediatric, community, and interdisciplinary healthcare while supporting children and young adults with complex medical needs.
• Eligible Medical Volunteers may be considered for waived camp fees for up to two approved children aged seven or older, subject to camp eligibility, available space, registration requirements, and Zajac Ranch approval.

Volunteer Position

This is an unpaid volunteer position. Onsite accommodation and meals are provided during the assigned camp session.
