Role Overview
- We are seeking 3D CAD Designers to support the design and iteration of mechanical components for upper-limb prosthetics.
- This role focuses on translating defined engineering requirements into clear, manufacturable CAD models that can be tested, printed, and iterated rapidly. Designers will work within an established system architecture and interface definitions, rather than designing in isolation.
- This role is well-suited to designers who enjoy precision, iteration, and real-world constraints.
Key Responsibilities
CAD Design & Iteration
- Create and modify 3D CAD models for prosthetic components (hands, wrists, sockets, harness elements).
- Update designs based on test feedback, integration issues, and manufacturing constraints.
- Maintain clean, well-structured CAD files and documentation suitable for collaboration.
Design for Manufacturing (DFM)
Design parts specifically for 3D printing, with attention to:
- Print orientation
- Wall thickness
- Tolerances
- Assembly and post-processing constraints
- Incorporate feedback from mechanical testing and print partners.
System & Interface Compliance
- Adhere to defined system interfaces and integration constraints.
- Coordinate with the Systems Integrator to ensure compatibility across components.
- Avoid local optimizations that cause system-level problems.
Documentation & Version Control
- Document design intent, assumptions, and key parameters.
- Maintain version clarity across iterations.
- Support traceability between design changes and test outcomes.
Collaboration & Review
- Participate in design reviews with engineers, testers, and integrators.
- Respond constructively to feedback and revise designs accordingly.
- Work within project timelines defined by Engineering Project Managers.
Required Qualifications
- Strong proficiency in 3D CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Onshape, or equivalent).
- Demonstrated experience designing mechanical parts, not just visual models.
- Basic understanding of materials, tolerances, and mechanical constraints.
- Ability to design for additive manufacturing.
- Clear communication and documentation skills.
- Comfortable working in a remote, collaborative environment.
Strongly Preferred (Not Required)
- Experience with prosthetics, wearables, robotics, or human-centered design.
- Experience iterating designs based on physical test feedback.
- Familiarity with version control practices for CAD.
- Experience in nonprofit, NGO, or volunteer-driven engineering teams.
Required degree level
- Experienced (Non Manager)
Years of experience (Optional)
- 3 - 5 years of experience
Required languages
- English
Required skills
