Position Title: Meals on Wheels Office Volunteer

Department: Community Programs

Reports To: Supervisor, Meals on Wheels or designate

Program Description:

Meals on Wheels is primarily a nutrition program with therapeutic, preventative and social components. The service involves the safe and efficient delivery of hot and frozen meals to persons who are unable to attend to their own nutritional needs. These clients include the elderly, disabled, chronically ill and/or convalescent.

Position Summary:

Under the supervision of the supervisor or designate, the volunteer will assist in the organization of effective delivery of the MOW program in collaboration with other volunteer and staff.

We are seeking a committed volunteer to support the daily operations of our Meals on Wheels program. The volunteer will support with sanitizing food delivery bins, reviewing and organizing stocked food items, and checking expiration dates to ensure food safety. Additionally, the volunteer will assist with administrative task, including highlighting meal selections on route sheets and noting important recipient information or special instructions to ensure accurate and efficient deliveries. Our Meals on Wheels office is located at Sunnybrook Hospital.

To reduce risk to clients, employees, volunteers and the agency, SPRINT Senior Care expects that all employees and volunteers will work within the mandate of their job description, and abide by the policies and procedures of the agency. Each volunteer is responsible for acting in a way that will not put themselves or others at risk.

Training:

  • Volunteer onboarding e-modules
  • Health and Safety training
  • Program specific orientation

Responsibilities:

  • Report to the Sunnybrook Hospital Meals on Wheels office by 1:30 p.m.
  • Some bending and/or lifting required.
  • Sanitize food delivery bins to maintain hygiene and safety standards.
  • Organize stocked food items in the storage area.
  • Help with inventory management, including restocking and reporting low stock.
  • Check expiration dates on all food items to ensure compliance with food safety guidelines.
  • Report any food safety concerns or damaged items to staff.
  • Assist with administrative tasks, including highlighting meal selections on route sheets and noting important client information or special instructions.
  • Assist with general upkeep of the Meals on Wheels workspace as needed.
  • Provide friendly interaction with staff and other volunteers to foster a positive environment.
  • Be familiar with emergency procedure.
  • Uphold privacy, dignity, and food safety standards at all times.

Time and Commitment:

  • Volunteer shifts available weekly Wednesdays from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
  • Volunteers should consider a minimum of three months commitment.

Organizational Responsibilities:

  • Represents SPRINT Senior Care positively and professionally in the community.

Success Measures:

  • Feedback from staff member.
  • Feedback from the Volunteer Satisfaction surveys completed by volunteers regarding their experience.

Qualifications:

  • Attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Reliable and punctual.
  • Ability to follow food safety guidelines.
  • Comfortable with light lifting (e.g., food bins)
  • Satisfactory Police Records Check.
  • Interest in community based social service and/or food services to an older adult population.
  • Ability to demonstrate good judgement and tact.

  • Volunteer
