Unpaid Volunteer Position

Hand Up Toronto from Hunger is a volunteer-run charitable organization that supports families experiencing food insecurity through the provision of food hampers, basic necessities, and access to community resources.

Purpose

Hand Up Toronto is seeking a creative and proactive volunteer to help strengthen our mission by expanding our digital presence, engaging our community, and amplifying our impact through effective marketing and communications. This role is ideal for someone with experience in digital marketing, social media management, content creation, or communications who wants to apply their skills to meaningful nonprofit work.

Summary

As a Marketing & Communications Coordinator, you’ll play a key role in shaping how Hand Up Toronto shows up online and in the community. Your primary focus will be to create, manage, and optimize marketing content and campaigns across digital platforms, including social media, email newsletters, web content, and promotional materials. This volunteer position is perfect for someone who enjoys storytelling, is detail-oriented, and wants to use creative skills to make a tangible difference.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, schedule, and publish engaging content for social media, newsletters, and other marketing channels.
  • Support the development of digital marketing campaigns that raise awareness and promote fundraising initiatives.
  • Maintain a consistent brand voice across all communications.
  • Monitor social media channels, respond to comments/messages, and help foster an engaged online community.
  • Track analytics and help assess the performance of content and campaigns.
  • Assist with the creation of marketing materials such as graphics, presentations, and promotional assets.
  • Collaborate with internal teams (Fundraising, Corporate Relations, Operations) to support cross-functional initiatives.
  • Stay up to date on trends in nonprofit marketing, social media, and community engagement.
  • Support website updates, including content refreshes and storytelling features.

Qualifications

  • Marketing/Communications Experience – Prior experience in digital marketing, social media management, content creation, or communications (professional, academic, or volunteer).
  • Strong Communication Skills – Excellent writing and editing abilities; comfortable adapting tone for various platforms.
  • Creativity & Storytelling – Ability to turn organizational updates and impact stories into engaging content.
  • Digital Literacy – Familiarity with major social media platforms, scheduling tools, and basic analytics.
  • Meta Ads Manager- Working knowledge of Facebook ads and Meta Business Suite is an asset.
  • Software - working knowledge of Asana, Canva, Capcut, Photoshop, WIX, and Mailchimp an asset.
  • Organizational Skills – Capable of managing multiple tasks, deadlines, and content schedules.
  • Team Collaboration – Willingness to work closely with the Marketing team and contribute to shared goals.
  • Self-Motivated – Able to take initiative, pitch ideas, and independently carry out tasks.
  • Professionalism – Represents the organization with integrity, positivity, and respect.

Time Commitment & Scheduling

• Minimum commitment of 3–4 hours per week

Risks & Challenges of the Position

This role is primarily desk-based; we encourage volunteers to maintain an ergonomic and healthy workspace.
Due to the real-time nature of social media, timely responses and consistent presence may be required. Open communication with the team and clear boundaries around availability are essential for balance and sustainability.
