About Etobicoke Humane Society (EHS)

The Etobicoke Humane Society (EHS) is an independent, no-kill animal shelter in Etobicoke, Ontario, dedicated to protecting, caring for, and finding forever homes for cats and dogs. Operated entirely by volunteers — including a volunteer Board of Directors — EHS receives no government funding and relies solely on donations and fundraising efforts.

The Opportunity

EHS is seeking a Managing Director, Shared Services to join our Senior Leadership Team. This volunteer leadership role focuses on strengthening the internal infrastructure that supports all areas of the organization.

You will provide strategic and operational oversight of the Finance, Human Resources, Information Technology, Office and Facilities functions — each led by a dedicated functional manager. Working closely with the Board of Directors and fellow Managing Directors, you will ensure that the organization’s support services operate efficiently, securely, and in alignment with EHS’s mission and strategic goals.

If you are a collaborative leader with strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills — and a desire to make a meaningful impact for animals in need — we encourage you to apply.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and integrate shared services (Finance, HR, IT, Office, and Facilities) to enable smooth organizational operations.
  • Develop and implement short- and long-term plans, budgets, and performance measures for each function.
  • Oversee and support the work of functional managers and their volunteer teams, ensuring engagement and alignment with EHS’s mission.
  • Maintain and improve internal systems, procedures, and controls to safeguard data, finances, and resources.
  • Provide financial oversight, ensuring secure handling of funds, accurate reporting, and adherence to budget goals.
  • Guide HR practices to promote volunteer engagement, retention, and compliance with EHS policies.
  • Lead Office team to ensure top quality service to all of the shelter visitors.
  • Oversee IT infrastructure and data protection, ensuring continuity and security.
  • Support facilities management, ensuring safety, functionality, and resource efficiency.
  • Lead or support cross-functional projects that strengthen EHS’s operations.
  • Report regularly to the Board on key developments, risks, and resource needs.
  • Foster teamwork, transparency, and collaboration across departments.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in one or more of the following areas: Finance, HR, IT, Facilities, Office or Operations.
  • Demonstrated experience leading cross-functional teams or shared services.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and strategic planning skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with technology (Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, cloud platforms, collaboration tools).
  • Ability to work effectively with volunteers and diverse stakeholders.
  • Polite, professional, and proactive in approach.
  • Membership with EHS (or willingness to become one).

Assets:

  • Prior experience in nonprofit management or governance.
  • Familiarity with animal welfare or shelter environments.

Requirements

  • Access to a computer and reliable internet connection.
  • Availability of approximately 10-15 hours per week (flexible scheduling).
  • Hybrid: primarily remote with some in-person participation in Etobicoke as needed.

Why Join EHS?

  • Lead a group of skilled volunteer professionals in key support functions.
  • Strengthen the systems that sustain animal welfare operations.
  • Gain valuable experience in nonprofit leadership and governance.
  • Make a tangible difference for animals and the community that cares for them.
