About Etobicoke Humane Society (EHS)

The Etobicoke Humane Society (EHS) is an independent, no-kill animal shelter in Etobicoke, Ontario, dedicated to protecting, caring for, and finding forever homes for homeless cats and dogs. Operated entirely by volunteers — including a volunteer Board of Directors — EHS receives no government funding and relies solely on donations and fundraising efforts.

The Opportunity

EHS is seeking a Managing Director of Animal Programs & Operations to join our Senior Leadership Team. This volunteer leadership position plays a key role in translating the organization’s strategic goals into day-to-day operations, ensuring our animal care works efficiently, safely, and collaboratively toward our mission.

The Managing Director will oversee the Cat Team, Dog Team, and Specialty Programs, each led by a functional senior manager. Working closely with the Board of Directors and other Managing Directors, this role ensures operational alignment, effective resource use, and strong volunteer engagement.

If you are an experienced people leader with a passion for animal welfare, strong organizational skills, and a desire to make a meaningful community impact — this role is for you.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and strategic oversight to animal care and office operations.
  • Ensure the safe, humane, and efficient operation of the shelter’s programs.
  • Support and guide senior managers in developing and executing short- and long-term plans and budgets for animal programs.
  • Oversee volunteer recruitment, training, supervision, and development through functional senior managers.
  • Foster collaboration and communication among teams, ensuring smooth cross-functional collaboration.
  • Work with senior managers to maintain relationships with government agencies and partner organizations.
  • Monitor program performance, ensuring compliance with regulations, policies, budgets, and safety standards.
  • Lead or support key operational and cross-functional projects as assigned.
  • Ensure timely and accurate reporting to the Board of Directors.
  • Serve as an advocate for animal welfare and a representative of EHS in the community.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of leadership or management experience, preferably in operations, animal care, or nonprofit environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams and manage competing priorities.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience developing and managing budgets.
  • Proficiency with technology, including Google Workspace, Microsoft Office and online collaboration tools.
  • Comfortable working around cats and dogs.
  • Membership with EHS (or willingness to become a member).

Assets:

  • Experience in animal sheltering or rescue operations.
  • Familiarity with volunteer management and nonprofit governance.

Requirements

  • Access to a computer and reliable internet.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle.
  • Availability of approximately 10-15 hours per week (flexible scheduling).

Why Join EHS?

  • Lead dedicated volunteer teams making a direct difference in animal welfare.
  • Gain meaningful leadership experience in a community-focused organization.
  • Collaborate with passionate animal advocates and nonprofit professionals.
  • Contribute to a growing organization making an impact across the Greater Toronto Area.
