Location: Fully remote – candidate may be based anywhere in Canada
Reports to: Board of Directors
Travel: Some travel within Canada and occasional international travel may be required
Role Overview
The Managing Director provides overall leadership for Heart Valve Voice Canada and is responsible for advancing the organization’s mission, building strong external relationships, securing funding, and ensuring programs and initiatives are successfully delivered.
This is a hands-on leadership role in a small, agile organization. The successful candidate will need to move comfortably between strategy and execution — identifying opportunities, developing programs, securing funding, building partnerships, overseeing delivery and reporting on results.
Key Responsibilities Mission, Programs & Advocacy
- Set priorities and develop programs that advance HVVC’s mission.
- Lead advocacy and policy initiatives.
- Oversee awareness, early detection and patient-focused programs.
- Develop and support research partnerships, patient involvement and knowledge mobilization.
- Ensure programs move from concept through funding, implementation, evaluation and reporting.
- Oversee organizational communications, messaging and external positioning.
Relationships & External Leadership
- Build and maintain trusted relationships with clinicians, researchers, health-system leaders, government, patient organizations and other key stakeholders.
- Develop and steward strong relationships with funders, industry and strategic partners.
- Identify opportunities for collaboration and bring the right people and organizations together.
- Represent HVVC nationally and internationally.
- Maintain and strengthen HVVC’s credibility, profile and influence.
Revenue & Partnerships
- Identify and cultivate new funding and partnership opportunities.
- Develop funding proposals and grant applications.
- Lead grant writing and submissions.
- Develop realistic scopes, budgets, timelines and deliverables that align with HVVC’s mission and capacity.
- Negotiate funding and partnership agreements.
- Manage funder stewardship and reporting.
- Maintain a pipeline of future funding opportunities and support revenue diversification.
Leadership & Organizational Management
- Provide overall strategic leadership and set organizational priorities.
- Work closely with the Board on strategy, governance and organizational development.
- Lead and support staff, setting clear priorities and accountability.
- Oversee budgets, financial management, contracts, risk and compliance.
- Ensure commitments to funders, partners and the Board are delivered and appropriately reported.
- Oversee day-to-day organizational operations and ensure HVVC has the capacity and resources needed to deliver its work.
Skills & Experience
The ideal candidate will bring:
- Strong strategic and organizational leadership.
- Exceptional relationship-building and stakeholder-management skills.
- Experience developing programs and taking initiatives from concept through funding, delivery and reporting.
- Demonstrated fundraising, grant-writing and partnership-development experience.
- Experience in healthcare, advocacy, public policy, research/knowledge mobilization or the nonprofit sector.
- Ability to work credibly with clinicians, researchers, government, industry, funders and patient organizations.
- Strong written, verbal and public-facing communication skills.
- Experience leading a small team and working with a Board.
- Sound financial and operational judgment.
- Ability to balance mission priorities with funding realities and organizational capacity.
- A collaborative, entrepreneurial and hands-on leadership style.
Canadian healthcare experience would be highly desirable. Cardiovascular experience would be an asset, but not necessarily a requirement.
