These include lifecycle events, educational opportunities, cultural celebrations, and community-building activities—ensuring a space for everyone to celebrate and enrich their Jewish faith and culture.

Position Summary

The Managing Director is a key leadership role responsible for overseeing the long-term sustainability of the synagogue. This position works in close partnership with the Board of Directors, Rabbi, staff, and congregants to ensure the synagogue thrives as a spiritual, cultural, and communal hub. The Managing Director’s key responsibilities include fundraising and development, staff management, board liaison and the execution of strategic priorities.

Key Responsibilities

Fundraising & Development

  • Develop and implement an annual fundraising strategy, including major gifts, grants, events, and donor stewardship.
  • Cultivate relationships with current and prospective donors.
  • Support Board-led fundraising efforts and synagogue campaigns.

Leadership & Administration

  • Supervise and support a small team of staff including the program & hebrew school director and administrator.
  • Provide oversight of the synagogue’s operations.
  • Monitor the synagogue’s operating budget in collaboration with the Treasurer and accountant.
  • Collaborate closely with the Rabbi and lay leadership to implement the synagogue’s mission and vision.

Board & Governance Support

  • Serve as the liaison between professional staff and the Board of Directors.
  • Prepare reports and materials for board meetings; attend and contribute to board and committee meetings.
  • Help implement policies and strategic goals set by the Board.

Communications

  • Strengthen communications systems and processes.
  • Develop a community-based communications plan.

Membership Engagement

  • Foster a welcoming and inclusive environment for all members.
  • Support programs, committees, lifecycle events in collaboration with the staff team.
  • Develop and implement membership and volunteer people processes and committees.

Other duties as appropriate and assigned by the Board of Directors.

Qualifications

  • Strong skills in fundraising, communications, and membership engagement.
  • Proven leadership experience, ideally in a nonprofit, synagogue, or community organization.
  • Knowledge of Jewish customs, culture, and lifecycle events; familiarity with the Conservative Jewish movement is an asset.
  • Exceptional organizational, communication, and interpersonal abilities.
  • Proficiency in office software (e.g., Microsoft Office, CRM/database systems); experience with synagogue management software an asset.
  • A collaborative, compassionate, and proactive working style.

Additional Details

  • Position is based onsite in North Vancouver with occasional evening and weekend responsibilities tied to community events.
  • Salary range $80,000 - $90,000
