Position Summary

The Manager, Marketing and Communications is responsible for developing and executing strategies that enhance the visibility of Mentor Canada through effective communications and marketing that articulate the organization’s impact, and increase stakeholder engagement to achieve the organization’s mission and vision. Reporting to the Executive Director, this role leads marketing and communication strategies, campaigns, content writing and brand management, while supervising the marketing and communications team. The Manager, Marketing and Communications supports the Mentor Canada team to cultivate and engage key influencers and audiences with well-constructed, dynamic communications. Additionally, the Manager oversees events, key marketing opportunities and initiatives, brand positioning and all communications to support the organization’s mission and long-term sustainability.

Key Responsibilities

The following outlines the key responsibilities of the Manager, Marketing and Communications:

Marketing, Communications

  • Develop and implement annual marketing and communications plan and multi-year strategy aligned with the organization’s goals.
  • Identify, cultivate, and steward relationships with media, marketing and communications stakeholders, and vendors.
  • Plan and execute major fundraising and marketing campaigns to achieve the organizations mission and vision.
  • Research and implement innovative marketing and communications techniques, including social media, paid media, website and digital campaigns.
  • Collaborate with leadership to align marketing and communications goals with organizational priorities and programs.
  • Lead and execute marketing and communications strategies focused on developing effective, high-impact marketing and communications, fundraising and donor engagement materials, including the annual general report, case for support documents, impact reports, newsletters, and website and communications content.
  • Lead the organization’s marketing, internal and external communications and brand integrity to ensure cohesive messaging across all stakeholder touchpoints, including website, email campaigns, social media, and media opportunities.
  • Track, analyze, and report on marketing and communications performance, using data-driven insights to improve future efforts.

Content Writing & Design

  • Develop compelling marketing and communications materials that amplify the organization’s impact, to achieve its mission and vision. This includes external communications and marketing materials for funders, donors, partners and stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with program staff to gather data, impact stories, and budget details for marketing and communications materials.
  • Develop, implement and maintain a communications and marketing calendar to track deadlines, campaigns, and marketing schedules.
  • Lead and implement the organization’s social media strategy, social media plan and materials, including social media benchmarking and engagement expectations.

Business Development & Sponsorships

  • Develop and execute the marketing and communications strategy, identifying potential partners aligned with the organization’s mission.
  • Prepare sponsorship proposals with corporate partners.
  • Identify new awareness-generating opportunities, including media, advertising opportunities and partnerships that support organizational growth.
  • Collaborate with leadership to create compelling materials for government engagement and public policy strategies.

Public Relations

  • Establish and develop media and public relations as an integral part of Mentor Canada’s communications strategy in order to elevate the brand and status in the field;
  • Identify trends and monitor current events and influencers to anticipate opportunities for Mentor Canada to engage in and/or lead the national conversation on youth development and mentoring;
  • Develop a press outreach strategy, including the writing and distribution of press releases, thought leadership or op/ed pieces, press kits and materials, interview preparation, and responses to media requests;
  • Seek ways to connect and advance the mentoring field through shared campaigns, messaging, and issue elevation opportunities.

Event Management & Community Engagement

  • Lead the planning and execution of the annual mentoring summit as well as other conferences, learning and special events.
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute fundraising and donor engagement events, including galas, auctions, community fundraisers, awareness and appreciation events.
  • Develop event sponsorship packages and secure financial and in-kind contributions.
  • Oversee event logistics, including venue selection, budgeting, marketing, and volunteer coordination.
  • Build relationships with community stakeholders, ensuring the organization is well-represented in the community.
  • Represent the organization at networking events, speaking engagements, and public forums to build awareness and attract supporters.

Financial Oversight and Reporting

  • Develop and manage the marketing and communications budget in collaboration with the Executive Director ensuring cost-effective use of resources.
  • Work closely with finance to track revenue sponsorships, campaigns and donations.
  • Provide regular reports on marketing and communications performance to the Executive Director and Board of Directors.
  • Ensure marketing and communications compliance with charitable laws, financial reporting requirements, and donor agreements

Education

  • Post-secondary degree in Marketing and/or Communications, Public Relations, Non-Profit Management, or a related field.

Skills and Experience

  • Minimum of 5-10 years of experience in marketing and communications, media relations, branding, content writing, preferably in a non-profit setting.
  • Proven track record of leading and implementing compelling, impactful marketing and communications strategies and materials with demonstrated impact, KPI measurement.
  • Bilingualism (English and French) is a key asset and preferred;
  • Effective experience in media, government relations and engagement.
  • Experience planning and executing events and engagement initiatives.
  • Strong knowledge of grant writing, key messaging and content writing best practices.
  • Ability to write compelling social media, funding applications and conduct marketing research.
  • Strong ability to develop dynamic websites, video content and online communications.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to engage and inspire engagement.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, deadlines, and fundraising/marketing initiatives effectively.
  • Ability to identify new marketing and communications opportunities and develop innovative approaches.
  • Experience with client management software (Salesforce), and software solutions to deliver and track dynamic marketing and communications strategies.
