ACTRA ( Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists ) is the national union of over 30,000 professional performers working in English-language recorded media in Canada, including TV, film, radio, and digital media. ACTRA’s principal role is to negotiate, administer and enforce collective agreements to provide performers with equitable compensation as well as safe and reasonable working conditions.

ACTRA National is seeking a full-time, permanent:

Manager, Finance & Operations

Every day, performers across Canada rely on ACTRA to protect their rights and help ensure they are paid properly for the use of their work. ACTRA is the national union representing more than 30,000 professional performers working in English-language recorded media in Canada.

Behind that mission is a finance and operations function where accuracy, compliance, systems, and trust matter deeply.

We are hiring a Manager, Finance & Operations to lead the financial and operational processes that support ACTRA’s performer payment and rights-management work, alongside our Performers' Rights Society (‘PRS’) and Recording Artists Collecting Society (‘RACS’) teams. PRS is an arm of ACTRA that collects and distributes Use fees/residuals and royalties, which are compensation that performers are entitled to for the use of their work. PRS ensures performers receive the money they are owed under our collective agreements. RACS is a performer collective dedicated to ensuring that all recording artists—from session musicians to featured vocalists—are fairly compensated for their work through licensing fees, neighbouring rights and private copying royalties.

This is a role for someone who wants more than a traditional finance management job. It is for a hands-on finance leader who likes complexity, sees patterns in messy processes, and knows how to turn important work into reliable systems.

The opportunity.

In this role, you will step into an area of ACTRA where the work is meaningful, detailed, and highly visible. You will help ensure that distributions, reconciliations, tax reporting, revenue allocations, and finance processes are accurate, timely, compliant, and easier to manage over time.

You will not just maintain the current process. You will be expected to improve it.

A strong performer in this role will quickly learn the day-to-day finance operations, identify where manual work and risk are slowing the team down, and create clearer, more repeatable ways of working. That includes building SOPs, improving documentation, supporting automation, strengthening controls, and making sure the work can continue smoothly when someone is away or priorities shift.

This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys working closely on the details while also leading people, improving systems, and contributing to a mission-driven organization.

A successful Finance and Operations Manager will.

  • Deliver accurate, compliant, and on-time PRS/RACS distributions, reconciliations, tax reporting, and related finance processes.
  • Reduce manual effort in distribution and tax reporting workflows by identifying inefficiencies and implementing practical improvements.
  • Create clear, usable SOPs for key PRS/RACS finance processes, operations services, procurement, vendor management, facilities, and storage.
  • Strengthen backup coverage and cross-training so that important work is not dependent on one person.
  • Improve the reliability, consistency, and audit-readiness of key finance processes.
  • Identify cost-saving or cost-control opportunities in office operations, vendor management, storage, procurement, or process design.
  • Built trust with the Controller, direct reports, internal stakeholders, and colleagues who rely on finance for timely and accurate support.
  • Led a team with clarity, accountability, and a hands-on approach.

The work you will own.

You will lead the execution and coordination of PRS/RACS finance processes, including distributions, contributions, transfers, reconciliations, journal entries, bank transactions, and bank reconciliations.

You will oversee HST, QST, and NRT remittances, coordinate annual tax slips and statutory reporting, including T4A, T5, T3, and Schedule 15, and support the accuracy of revenue allocations and financial records.

You will review end-to-end PRS/RACS distribution and tax processes to identify risks, inefficiencies, manual work, control gaps, and opportunities for automation or standardization.

You will also oversee ACTRA National’s office operations, including procurement, vendor relationships, office supplies, mailroom functions, equipment, facilities coordination, on-site and off-site storage, and support for insurance renewal data gathering.

You will manage direct reports, support their performance and development, and step in when needed to help the team deliver. This is a leadership role, but it is not a hands-off role. Are you ready to roll up your sleeves?

Who will thrive here?

You will likely enjoy this role if you are the kind of finance professional who naturally asks:

“How can this process be cleaner?”
“Where is the risk?”
“What should be documented?”
“What can we automate?”
“How do we make this easier for the next person?”
“What does the team need from me to get this done properly?”

The strongest candidates will bring solid accounting and finance experience, as well as comfort with reconciliations, journal entries, tax remittances, reporting deadlines, internal controls, financial systems, and process improvement.

You do not need to come from ACTRA’s world, but you do need to be curious enough to learn it quickly. The work involves specialized performer payment and rights-related processes, so the ability to absorb new information, connect finance with operations, and build structure around complexity is essential.

What you bring.

We are looking for someone with:

  • A university degree in finance, commerce, economics, accounting, or a related field.
  • Approximately 5–7 years of experience in finance, accounting, FP&A, or related financial operations.
  • At least 1–2 years of management experience.
  • Strong accounting fundamentals, including reconciliations, journal entries, controls, reporting, and compliance.
  • Advanced Excel skills and comfort working with computerized accounting systems.
  • Experience with tax compliance and reporting such as HST, T4A, T5, T3, NRT, or similar filings.
  • The ability to lead staff while staying close enough to the work to understand what is really happening.
  • A practical, systems-minded approach to solving problems.
  • Strong judgment, confidentiality, follow-through, and attention to detail.

A CPA, CA, CFA, or similar designation is an asset, but not the only measure of success in this role.

Why ACTRA

At ACTRA, finance is not just a back-office function. It is part of the trust infrastructure behind the organization’s mandate.

Your work will help ensure that money is tracked properly, reporting is accurate, processes are controlled, and performers can rely on the systems that support them. You will have the chance to become a more well-rounded leader by combining finance leadership, people management, operational accountability, and process transformation.

This is a role where the right person can leave things meaningfully better than they found them.
