We are currently recruiting two Board members to provide strategic guidance in the following areas of expertise:

  • Major Gifts and Philanthropy
  • Human Resources

Description

Members of the Board of Directors provide mission-based leadership and strategic governance. While day-to-day operations are led by MMM’s CEO, the Board-CEO relationship is a partnership, and the appropriate involvement of the Board is both critical and expected.

Board member roles and responsibilities include:

  • Provide strategic leadership and oversight, ensuring strong governance and long-term financial sustainability
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to the CEO as they develop and implement MMM’s strategic plan
  • Prepare for, attend, and conscientiously participate in regular Board meetings (currently once every two months)
  • Participate on a standing committee of the Board and serve on ad-hoc committees or task forces as necessary
  • Approve MMM’s annual budget, audit reports, and material business decisions; remain informed of and uphold all legal and fiduciary responsibilities
  • Represent MMM to community stakeholders, acting as an ambassador for the organisation
  • Cultivate relationships within personal and professional networks that support MMM’s mission
  • Identify and cultivate prospective donors and sponsors
  • Participate actively in fundraising events and campaigns
  • Provide a personal financial contribution at a level that is meaningful and commensurate with one’s capacity

We expect each Board member to:

  • Know and commit to MMM’s mission, policies, programs, and strategic priorities
  • Respect all who bring their voices and lived experiences into the boardroom and the organization
  • Uphold and embody our values of collaboration, creativity, and compassion.

Term length: Three years, which may be renewed up to a maximum of three consecutive terms, pending approval of the board.

To apply: If you are interested in joining the Make Music Matter Board of Directors, please communicate your interest to stuart@makemusicmatter.org with a summary of your motivations and an outline of relevant experience and qualifications.

As MMM expands its programming with Indigenous partners in Canada, we particularly welcome applications from Indigenous professionals and individuals with strong relationships and lived experience within Indigenous communities. We are committed to ensuring Indigenous representation on our Board and aim to fill at least one of the available positions with an Indigenous Board member.

About Make Music Matter

Make Music Matter (MMM)’s mission is to strengthen the capacity of organisations to deliver trauma-informed mental health care through music, fostering healing, dignity, and wellbeing for vulnerable individuals and communities.

Through our innovative, evidence-based Healing in Harmony model, we work globally with local partners to make mental health care more accessible. Guided by a local therapist and music producer, participants engage in group therapy sessions that use songwriting and performance as therapeutic tools to safely explore, process, and express their experiences and emotions. This process leads to significant improvements in psychological wellbeing, helping participants rebuild self-worth, regain agency, and unlock the potential for transformative change.

Songs created through the program become powerful tools for education and awareness, helping to combat stereotypes, stigma, and shame. Music is disseminated through local radio stations, community concerts, social media, and major streaming platforms via A4A Records, with global distribution through Warner Music Canada.

To date, Make Music Matter has supported over 19,000 individuals across nine countries - the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Turkey, Syria, Guinea, South Africa, Uganda, Peru, and Canada. Target groups include adults, youth, and children who have experienced trauma, including survivors of sexual violence, individuals living in poverty and conflict, refugees and displaced persons, and other vulnerable populations.
