About MAiDHouse
MAiDHouse is a registered Canadian charity with operational sites in Toronto and Victoria. Our mission is to provide a comfortable and compassionate end-of-life experience to people eligible for Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD), for whom home, for a variety of reasons is not an option. MAiDHouse Toronto is the first dedicated community-based MAiD site of its kind in Ontario.
Volunteer Role – Overview
This is a rare and meaningful role. MAiDHouse Toronto volunteers work alongside MAiDHouse staff and a small team of trained peers to ensure every provision unfolds with dignity, care, and meticulous attention. This is a support and logistical role, not a clinical one. The ideal volunteer is emotionally grounded, highly organized, and deeply committed to equitable access to dignified end-of-life care.
What Makes This Opportunity Different
This role asks something of you that most volunteer positions do not. You will need to bring:
- Emotional maturity and groundedness – supporting people through deeply significant moments
- Flexibility and adaptability – responding to the unpredictable nature of end-of-life care • Strong boundaries and self-awareness – knowing where you end and others begin
- Community-building skills – nurturing relationships with staff, volunteers, and partners
- Attention to detail – supporting logistics, documentation, and follow-through
- Calm presence – managing emotionally heightened situations with grace and professionalism
If you find meaning in supporting people during profound life moments and thrive in a role that blends structure with flexibility, this may be the opportunity you’ve been looking for.
Key Responsibilities
- Support day of provision logistics
- Assist with coordination, hosting and connecting to resources
- Provide compassionate emotional support

What We’re Looking For
Personal Qualities

Integrity, collaborative spirit, and a genuine commitment to dignified end-of-life care are essential.
Skills & Experience
- Experience in end-of-life care, grief support, healthcare, or community work
- Comfort with aging, illness, death and dying - personal and/or professional
- Strong organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail
- Excellent verbal communication
- Ability to work independently and as part of a small team
- Commitment to non-judgmental, person-centered, inclusive and equitable care.
Qualifications
No specific credentials are required. We welcome people from a wide range of backgrounds — what matters most is lived experience or experience with end-of-life, grief, or care work, and the emotional readiness this role demands.
Practical Requirements
- Comfort with an irregular schedule including occasional early mornings, evenings and weekends
- Physical mobility i.e. climbing stairs, ability to lift up to 25 lbs. and ability to assist with setup and breakdown of the space
Benefits
- Gain meaningful skills and experience in end-of-life support
- Contribute to an essential and compassionate community resource
- Join a dedicated, supportive volunteer community
Training Requirement
Candidates are required to complete the Volunteer Training Program before joining the onsite volunteer team. This training prepares participants to provide emotional and logistical support for people accessing MAiDHouse and those accompanying them.
Training is an integral part of the process. Throughout the program, both the participant and MAiDHouse will be actively assessing fit. Volunteers may determine at any point that this work is not right for them, and MAiDHouse may determine that a participant is not the right fit for the team. This is a mutual process, and we hold space for honest reflection on both sides. Completing training does not guarantee an invitation to join the volunteer team.
