The Advocate will support workers in preparing applications for work permit renewals, submitting simple claims to the Employment Standards Branch and other institutions, and provide guidance community workers on providing these supports themselves. This position will involve fostering connections, providing education, and empowering workers to exercise their rights.

Responsibilities

  • Assist workers with applications for work permits, vulnerable worker open work permits, and other immigration-related processes
  • Support workers with filing Employment Standards Branch complaints and following other employment-related processes
  • Assist workers in representing themselves before administrative bodies: preparing written submissions, advocating at hearings, and pursuing reconsideration or appeals of decisions.
  • Develop and co‑facilitate public legal‑education workshops and produce plain‑language resources for migrant workers.
  • Coordinate with MWC staff in a proactive manner to share information, request support and resources, and ensure referred migrant workers are being supported on a timely basis.

Qualifications

  • Law degree, paralegal diploma, or equivalent combination of undergraduate education and legal training.
  • At least two years of experience in legal advocacy, community legal services, or related frontline work.
  • Knowledge of immigration processes and statutes such as the Employment Standards Act.
  • Proficiency in Spanish, Tagalog, or other languages that are common in BC’s migrant worker community.
  • Strong understanding of the challenges faced by migrant workers, particularly in agricultural settings. Personal experience of migration and migrant work is considered a strong asset.
