Role overview
PIFA is seeking a volunteer or pro bono Legal Advisor to help us navigate the legal aspects of running a nonprofit organization. The ideal candidate will have experience in nonprofit, charity, or contract law and will provide strategic legal guidance on key issues, including:
Key Responsibilities

Donor & Artist Agreements – Review and refine agreements between PIFA and artists to ensure legal compliance and transparency.

Tax & Compliance – Provide guidance on CRA regulations, nonprofit tax filings, and donation receipt policies.

Governance & Policies – Advise on board structure, bylaws, and policies to align with best practices for nonprofit governance.

Intellectual Property – Ensure proper licensing and copyright protections for artwork sold through PIFA.

Contracts & Partnerships – Draft and review agreements with partner charities, sponsors, and service providers.

Liability & Risk Management – Identify potential legal risks and recommend strategies for protection, including waivers, liability clauses, and insurance considerations.

Fundraising & Financial Regulations – Help ensure compliance with legal requirements for fundraising, financial transparency, and corporate sponsorships.
Qualifications

Licensed lawyer or experienced legal professional (ideally with experience in nonprofit/charity law) or students with an interest in the NPO law sector.

Familiarity with Canadian nonprofit tax law, CRA regulations, and charity compliance.

Experience with contract drafting, risk management, and governance.

Passion for social impact, arts, and community-driven initiatives.

Ability to explain legal concepts in simple, actionable terms to a team with limited legal expertise.
