Lawyer or Community Legal Worker Permanent, Full-time (1) Permanent, Part-time (21 hours/week) (1)
IAVGO is seeking lawyers or community legal workers with experience in working alongside marginalized and precarious workers and interested in working within a community legal clinic as part of a collective team of community organizers, community legal workers, lawyers, and administrative staff.
IAVGO is a specialty legal clinic, funded by Legal Aid Ontario, to provide legal services to injured workers throughout Ontario. Our services include legal advice, legal representation, public legal education, law reform advocacy, and community outreach and development. The clinic operates as a collective, where the staff shares in the day-to-day management of the clinic.
IAVGO is a leader in workers’ compensation law. We are committed to building the collective strength and capacity of injured workers and their organizations to improve Ontario’s workers’ compensation system. We also train and supervise law students through our satellite clinic, Advocates for Injured Workers.
IAVGO is committed to helping the most disadvantaged injured workers, especially those who are precariously employed or belong to marginalized communities. We prioritize cases involving migrant workers.
Main Duties of the Job:
- Advise and represent injured workers in workers’ compensation and related proceedings
- Participate in the clinic’s law reform, public legal education, community development, outreach, and test case work
- Support other clinic caseworkers with research and strategic advice
- Depending on qualifications, share in supervising our law student satellite clinic
- Produce reports for policy advocacy and law reform
- Support a meaningful commitment to equity and diversity in all aspects of our work, including our internal collective operations and our external-facing service provision
- It is anticipated that the part-time position will be more front-line service and intake work
Minimum Qualifications:
- Experience working with precariously employed workers or marginalized groups
- Support for IAVGO’s commitment to building the collective strength and capacity of injured workers
Preferred Qualifications/ Assets:
- Experience representing injured workers, especially before the WSIB and WSIAT
- Experience working in a community legal clinic or similar setting
- Knowledge of poverty law issues
- Experience writing reports for policy advocacy and law reform
- Experience supervising students
- Law reform organizing and strategic litigation experience
- Ability to work in a second language, especially Spanish or Mandarin
- Two or more years of experience working in a legal setting

Compensation and benefits:
- Salary range is $72,000 - $77,000 commensurate with level of experience or call to the Bar (plus benefits)
