Justice System Navigator

Ottawa Rape Crisis Centre (ORCC)

The Ottawa Rape Crisis Centre (ORCC) provides services and supports to people in Ottawa and surrounding areas who have experienced sexual and/or gender-based violence. As a Justice System Navigator, you will contribute to the evolution of ORCC’s counselling team within a historic and survivor-centered not-for-profit organization committed to advancing best practices in service delivery.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Director of Programs, the Justice System Navigator (JSN) provides comprehensive guidance and individualized support to clients navigating the justice system. This includes education, advocacy, accompaniment to justice-related appointments, and collaboration with ORCC’s Service Navigator and Counselling Team.

The JSN bridges gaps between survivors and justice processes, fostering a trauma-informed, clientcentered, and anti-oppressive environment that promotes safety and empowerment.

Employment Details

  • Position Type: Contract
  • Hours: 28–30 hours per week (0.75–0.8 FTE)
  • Contract End Date: March 31, 2027
  • Start Date: May 2026 (flexible)
  • Work Model: Hybrid (virtual and in-person)
  • Funding: Position is contingent upon current funding ending March 31, 2027.

Key Responsibilities

Education & Client Advocacy

  • Provide justice system education to staff, clients, and community partners
  • Develop materials addressing common justice-related questions for survivors
  • Conduct intake assessments, risk assessments, and safety planning
  • Provide short-term crisis intervention (1–2 sessions as needed)
  • Accompany clients to justice-related appointments
  • Maintain accurate client records in ORCC’s electronic database

Service Navigation & Community Partnerships

  • Respond to client inquiries and facilitate referrals
  • Develop and maintain relationships with justice-sector partners
  • Maintain a database of justice-related supports and resources
  • Attend community meetings and outreach events as required

Team Engagement

  • Participate in counselling team meetings and professional development
  • Contribute to ORCC’s collaborative, problem-solving culture

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Work or Social Service Worker Diploma (or equivalent)
  • Registration (or eligibility) with a relevant Ontario regulatory body
  • Minimum 2–3 years’ experience in community-based trauma, justice, or mental health settings
  • Experience working with marginalized and oppressed communities

Knowledge & Skills

  • Trauma-informed, anti-racist, anti-oppressive practice framework
  • Motivational interviewing and short-term intervention skills
  • Knowledge of Ottawa-area justice system resources
  • Strong crisis intervention and risk assessment skills
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively

Assets

  • ASSIST, de-escalation, or trauma-sensitive training
  • Fluency in a language other than English
  • Extensive experience with the Ontario justice system

Requirements

  • Police Records Check (Vulnerable Sector Screening)
  • Ability to travel locally as required

Salary & Benefits

Salary range: $65,000–$75,000 annual equivalent, pro-rated to 28–30 hours per week, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
