Unpaid Volunteer Position
Description:
Junior MAP volunteers support elementary-aged children with foundational literacy and numeracy skills in one-on-one and small-group formats. Volunteers use engaging, age-appropriate activities to build confidence, reinforce classroom learning, and support social-emotional growth in a welcoming school-based setting.
Location & Schedule:
Program Season: September 2025 – June 25, 2026
Days & Times: 3:30 PM – 5:30 PM
- Monday: Sir John A. MacDonald Public School (Sept 15, 2025)
- Tuesday: Northbrae Public School (Sept 16, 2025)
- Wednesday: East Carling Public School (Sept 17, 2025)
- Thursday: Lord Elgin Public School (Sept 18, 2025)
- Commitment: Flexible shifts, 3–12 hours/week
Duties:
- Provide targeted support in reading (phonics, fluency), writing, and basic math (number sense, operations).
- Use games, manipulatives, and read-aloud strategies to engage learners.
- Lead small-group activities and support classroom teachers/staff as directed.
- Track informal progress and share observations with program staff.
- Support positive behaviour, turn-taking, and classroom routines.
- Assist with setting up/cleaning learning materials and spaces.
Education / Skills:
- Current high school student (Grade 9–12) or graduate comfortable working with children.
- Patient, enthusiastic, and reliable.
- Asset: prior experience tutoring, babysitting, or classroom volunteering.
