Volunteer Opportunity: Community Representative on U of T Animal Care Committee
Are you passionate about upholding ethical standards in animal research and teaching? Do you want to play a vital role in this important process?
At the University of Toronto (U of T), we are committed to conducting research with the highest ethical standards. Our Animal Care Committees (ACCs) play a crucial role in reviewing research and teaching proposals to ensure the welfare of animals involved. We are currently seeking volunteers to serve as Community Representatives on a U of T ACC, providing a public perspective in this essential review process (CCAC, 2006; CCAC, 2021).
Why Volunteer with Us
U of T is seeking individuals who will bring community insight into decisions involving the use of animals in research and teaching. No scientific background is required, but a genuine interest in animal welfare and the ability to work constructively in a team setting are essential.

U of T is seeking individuals who will bring community insight into decisions involving the use of animals in research and teaching. No scientific background is required, but a genuine interest in animal welfare and the ability to work constructively in a team setting are essential.
Key Requirements
- Not currently affiliated with U of T
- No current or past involvement in animal-based research, teaching, or testing
- At least 18 years of age
- Reside in the Greater Toronto Area
- Be able to attend at least one in-person meeting per year (downtown Toronto, Mississauga, or Scarborough, depending on the Committee)
- Able to serve for a minimum of 2 years (~ 3 to 5 hours per month)
- No real or perceived conflict of interest related to the role
- Compassion for all living beings and a strong sense of ethical responsibility
- Comfortable expressing thoughts and opinions in a group setting in a respectful manner
- Proficient in using technology and have access to a computer and reliable internet connection
- Committed to supporting ethical research and teaching at U of T
- No scientific background required (education or experience)
