Join the UNSMOKE Butt Blitz® - Canada’s Largest Cigarette Litter Cleanup!
Make a real environmental impact with A Greener Future this April!
Cigarette butts are one of the most common - and most overlooked - forms of litter, accounting for 1 in 5 pieces of litter we find at our shoreline cleanups. They may be small, but they’re far from harmless. Cigarette filters are made from plastic and contain toxic chemicals that leach into our soil and waterways as they break down. In fact, a single cigarette butt can contaminate up to 1000 litres of water!
That’s why A Greener Future is hosting the UNSMOKE Butt Blitz - an ambitious campaign to collect 1 million cigarette butts across Canada in April.
And this year we're turning trash into treasure!
If we hit our goal, the collected cigarette waste will be recycled into a community park bench - a lasting symbol of environmental action and collective impact. Every single butt collected directly contributes to building something lasting.
How it works:
- Sign Up: Browse our Public Events and pick a date/location near you.
- Show Up: Check in with our team. We will provide supplies and a safety briefing.
- Collect: Head out with a group of like-minded volunteers to clear the streets and parks.
- Track: Watch our Live Dashboard to see the total count climb in real-time!
- Vote: Help us decide where our new bench gets installed!
Location: Various sites across the GTHA (Toronto, Hamilton, & Durham)
Time commitment: These one-time events run for 2 hours.

Cigarette litter is so normalized that most people don’t even notice it anymore, but together we can change that. Every cleanup sparks conversation. Every volunteer shifts culture. Every single butt removed is one less piece of plastic polluting our environment.
