Join Canada’s Largest Cigarette Litter Cleanup - From Your Own Community!
Ready to kick some Butt this Spring? Join the UNSMOKE Butt Blitz® and become part of a nationwide movement working to collect 1 million cigarette butts this April.
We can’t reach this goal without individuals like you! Whether you collect 10 butts or 10,000, your effort directly contributes to a cleaner, healthier Canada and proves that small actions lead to meaningful change.
Cigarette butts are one of the most common - and most overlooked - forms of litter, accounting for 1 in 5 pieces of litter we find at our shoreline cleanups. They may be small, but they’re far from harmless. Cigarette filters are made from plastic and contain toxic chemicals that leach into our soil and waterways as they break down. In fact, a single cigarette butt can contaminate up to 1,000 litres of water!
By participating in the UNSMOKE Butt Blitz, you’re not only removing pollution from your community, you’re also helping shift awareness around one of the most normalized forms of plastic waste.
How it Works:
- Register
- Sign up as an individual through the form on our website.
- Learn the basics
- You’ll receive a short training through email that covers safety, what to collect, and how to submit your data.
- Collect cigarette butts from April 1st - 30th
- Go out anywhere in your community and collect cigarette litter once or multiple times.
- Submit your data
- Each time you go out, submit how many cigarette butts you collected so your impact counts toward the national total.
- Mail them in
- Send us your collection to be recycled through TerraCycle Canada (shipping label provided).
Optional: Join one of our three short (30-minute max) virtual meetups to connect with fellow Butt Blitzers across the country.
This opportunity is completely flexible throughout April - you choose when and where you participate. Collected cigarette butts will be responsibly recycled through TerraCycle Canada. Whether you pick up a handful or a bucketful, every single cigarette butt removed helps build our collective impact.
