Your opportunity:
In this role, you will work collaboratively within a dynamic, multi-disciplinary team to provide holistic accommodations services and supports to students with disabilities. You will play a key part in ensuring an efficient intake and registration process, reviewing and assessing confidential medical and psychological documentation, and determining and implementing appropriate interim accommodations. You will liaise regularly with faculty, instructors, external service provides, community agencies, and internal university partners to support the effective delivery of accommodations and related services.
Core responsibilities include assessing eligibility of students to access services, processing registrations and planning and implementing interim accommodations based on each student’s disability-related needs and strengths. You will also supervise front-line staff who provide support services to students, which include booking appointments, responding to enquiries regarding services and assisting with the arrangement of accommodations.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Checking eligibility of students to access services
- Applying the established Ontario Human Rights Commission (OHRC) Guidelines on Accessible Education to determine reasonable accommodations
- Reading and assessing medical information to develop accommodations for students
- Liaising with an inter-disciplinary support team on the best approach to provide student care and service
- Advising course instructors and staff on student accommodations issues
- Overseeing day-to-day service delivery requirements and operational needs (of front-line services)
- Developing and revising business methods that support administrative workflow and objectives
- Directing the activities of a group of staff-appointed employees all performing a similar function
Essential Qualifications:
- Master's Degree in Social Work, Counselling, Education and/or a relevant disability-related field such as rehabilitation services, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum four years of related experience working with adults with learning and mental health disabilities with co-morbid conditions, including two years of experience completing intake and registration for students with disabilities, assessing a range of medical documentation and developing and implementing interim accommodations in a post-secondary or student services environment
- Must have experience reviewing clinical documentation, including psycho-educational testing reports and psychological evaluations
- Demonstrated experience dealing with persons in emotional distress or conflict
- Experience supervising a small team and overseeing the planning and workflow of administrative support services (i.e. supporting front desk intake and registration services)
- Excellent computer proficiency and experience working with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, as well as scheduling and data management software (i.e. Clockwork)
- Knowledge of service provision for students with hearing and visual disabilities
- Must be committed to the principles of equity, diversity and inclusion and be able to demonstrate an understanding of the implication of disabilities as they relate to students' success at university
- Demonstrated understanding of the strengths and challenges of youth and adults with mental health and learning disabilities and have knowledge of cultural views of disability
- Excellent reading, oral and written communication skills, including presentation and facilitations skills
- Sound critical-thinking and interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated ability to synthesize knowledge and display sound judgement, attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy and ability to respond calmly and efficiently in crisis situations
- Ability to work effectively both independently and within an inter-disciplinary team
- Ability to exercise initiative, tact, discretion, problem-solving skills and work in a fast-paced environment
- Knowledgeable about general academic structure of a University and specific requirements of academic courses and programs
