Indigenous Program Manager
Description
Warriors Against Violence Society Programs
Since 1998, Warriors Against Violence Society (WAVS) has been providing effective programs to Indigenous families healing from trauma and violence. WAVS programs include Community Outreach, Elders Program, Food Security, Individual and Family Counselling, Basic Needs Support, Community Potluck and Events, and group circles. WAVS circles provide families with information on the ways they can prevent violence as well as gives people the opportunity to share their experiences and stories. WAVS’ work with men aims to help them learn where their anger comes from and support individuals to use information and tools to stop violence, towards building safer healthier lives.
The Mamook Kloshe Initiative
WAVS has identified the need to develop the Mamook KlosheCommunity Safe Hub, which understands and responds to the root causes of gender-based violence for Indigenous peoples, i.e., poverty, racism, history of colonization, loss of land and resources, residential schools, the 60s scoop, etc., by providing holistic and culturally appropriate supports. The Mamook Kloshe Community Safe Hub would provide 24/7 culturally responsive and accessible supports to Indigenous families. A core component of the Safe Hub is to provide tailored support to Indigenous men, by working with elders, engaging in male-specific counselling sessions, participating in ceremonies and the provision of short-term residential services.
