Family Councils Ontario works with long-term care residents’ families, Family Councils, and home staff across Ontario to foster positive relationships, strengthen Family Councils, and enhance the long-term care experience. As a registered charitable nonprofit funded by the Ontario Ministry of Long-Term Care, we support families through consultation, education, training, and resources, working to create a safe, inclusive, and respected long-term care system.

About the Role:

The Indigenous Community Relations Coordinator(s) will lead Family Councils Ontario’s engagement with Indigenous long-term care homes and communities across Ontario. The role focuses on building respectful, reciprocal relationships, supporting Indigenous family engagement in long-term care, helping to form and sustain effective family councils, and ensuring FCO programs and public policy input reflect Indigenous perspectives, priorities, and cultural protocols.

This position centers listening, collaboration, and co-design, ensuring Indigenous communities, long-term care homes, and family caregivers are active partners in shaping Family Council initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

Establish and maintain ongoing, respectful relationships with Indigenous Nations, communities, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and Indigenous-led LTC homes and other organizations.

Act as the primary liaison between Family Councils Ontario and Indigenous LTC homes.

Develop and deliver education and training to family councils and long-term care homes, focusing on homes with Indigenous residents, caregivers, and home staff.

Facilitate dialogue to understand community needs, priorities, and barriers to engagement.

Collaborate with Indigenous partners to co-design outreach initiatives, training, and resources.

Ensure programs are culturally safe, strengths-based, and aligned with Indigenous self-determination.

Support Family Councils Ontario’s public policy input by ensuring Indigenous perspectives are represented in submissions, policy recommendations, and public statements.

Monitor relevant Indigenous-focused policies and programs in long-term care and report implications to FCO leadership

Track engagement activities, participation, and outcomes with Indigenous communities, respecting data sovereignty.

Prepare reports, presentations, and updates for internal leadership, funders, and Indigenous partners.

Support evaluation and continuous improvement of Indigenous engagement initiatives

Key Qualifications

Strong preference for Indigenous candidates

Post-secondary education in Indigenous Studies, Social Work, Community Development, or related field (or equivalent lived experience).

Experience working with Indigenous communities in Ontario, with demonstrated understanding of Indigenous protocols, cultures, and community engagement practices.

Experience in program coordination, outreach, or community engagement is preferred.

Strong interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills.

Ability to facilitate difficult conversations respectfully and diplomatically.

Knowledge of the long-term care sector, Family Councils, or community advocacy is an asset.

Cultural humility, sensitivity, and commitment to reconciliation.

Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects independently.

Familiarity with evaluation methods, reporting, and outcomes tracking.

Willingness to travel regionally and attend community events.

Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle may be required depending on the region.

Position Details:

Salary: $35,000 annual salary

Benefits: Participation in the OPTrust Select pension plan (3% matched contributions) is optional. Health Spending Account is included.

Availability: Must be available to work 14 hours per week during FCO’s standard hours (Monday–Thursday, 9 AM–5 PM). This schedule helps ensure continuous collaboration with the team and supports cohesive project delivery. Occasional overtime, travel, or evening/weekend commitments may be required.

Location: Home office with travel throughout Ontario.
