HOURS: 22.5 hours per week
DURATION: Three months (Summer Term)
LOCATION: Ottawa or Toronto, Hybrid
SALARY: $22.50 per hour

SUMMARY:
The Human Resources Summer Student will support a unionized Human Resources environment by assisting with administrative, research, and project-based work related to legislative compliance, collective agreement, accessibility, human rights, and labour relations. This role provides practical experience working within a unionized setting while supporting respectful labour management relationships and compliance with applicable legislation. The successful candidate will assist with reviewing policies, supporting employee programs, and contributing to legislative and compliance related initiatives in alignment with organizational values.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
Key Responsibilities
- Support ongoing Equity, People & Culture (EPC) projects by researching, collecting information, and organizing materials.
- Assist in reviewing and updating Human Resource (HR) policies and procedures to ensure compliance with applicable legislation, including Employment Standards Act (ESA) and the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA)
- Conduct research on legislation, interpretations, and best practices affecting unionized workplaces and contribute insights for policy and operational improvements.
- Assist in drafting reports, presentations, and summaries based on research findings.
- Receive and appropriately direct inquiries related to labour relations and union matters
- Support preparation of materials related to collective agreement or labour management meetings or consultations as needed
- Support general EPC operations and contribute to miscellaneous team projects as needed
- Perform all other related and relevant tasks as required to support the Manager, People and Culture.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education
- Currently completing the final year of a Bachelor’s program or enrolled in Post Graduate Certificate/Diploma in Human Resources, Industrial Relations, Organizational Development, Change Management, or a related field
Experience
- Exposure to Human Resources or Labour Relation concepts through coursework or volunteer roles is helpful.
- Experience working in non-for-profit organization would be considered as an asset.
Skills & Abilities
- Strong research, analytical, and organizational skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain confidentiality
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
- General Understanding of unionized workplace practices and labour relations principles
- Basic knowledge of employment legislation- Employment Standards Act (ESA), Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), Ontario Human Rights Code, and labour relations principles
- Willingness to learn, take direction, ask questions, and work collaboratively
This is a part-time role, with working hours to be scheduled between Monday and Thursday based on operational needs. The office closes early on Friday, and this role is not expected to work on Fridays.
